Blakemere's Weekly Blog - 17.01.2025
Date: 19th Jan 2025 @ 9:29am
Another successful week with lots of learning achieved. Well done Blakemere!
English
This week, we began by exploring modal verbs and adverbs of possibility and certainty. We explored what they were and how we can use then in a sentence. The children were then tasked to write sentences about Matthew Henson (the first African-American explorer to reach the North Pole) and his adventures. Then we moved on to planning a letter together in role as Matthew Henson thinking about what he would include in this letter about his adventures to his friend Janey. We then spent some time producing our letters. I have been very impressed with the writing that I have seen this week.
Maths
We are still within our Fractions unit in Maths and this week we have explored adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators and adding and subtracting fractions with mixed numbers.
Science
This week we explored the life and work of Charles Darwin, a naturalist who focused on the theory of evolution. The children produced a fact file about him using information that they had researched.
Geography
In Georgraphy, we have continued to explore the physical features of the UK with a particular focus on rivers and seas. The children needed to use an atlas and the shape of the UK to help them to successfully find the river and then label it on their map. Once they had completed this task, they had to pick a river and completes some research about it.
Well done
A huge well done this week to Michael for winning the raffle ticket prize and to Kobe, Arabella, Finley, Rosabeller, Natalie, Roey and Eva E for having their work selected for Excellent Examples. They will bring this work home with them next Friday to share with you. This week, Ava K, Franklin and Annie received their Bronze Reading Star badges. Finally, a huge well done to Harry for being selected as Worker of the Week in Blakemere by their peers.
Secret Question
Share our class blog with your child and send them in with the answer to this secret question to earn themselves some raffle tickets:
Name a famous landmark in the UK.
What can you do at home?
• Ensure your child has prepared themselves for the week ahead by having their reading book in school with them every day.
• PE is on a Monday and Thursday so please ensure that your child has the correct PE kit in on those days. Appropriate footwear is also encouraged. We will continue to be outside for PE on Monday’s along as it is not raining so it is incredibly important that the children have jogging bottoms to wear.
• Read with your child and encourage them to find books and reading materials that they are interested in. I am also always happy to help and recommend books if needed. Please record this reading each day on the online reading log. A new link is sent to you from Learning with Parents each week. I absolutely love reading the comments, seeing the photographs and hearing the audio clips of the children reading.
• Encourage your child to practise their times tables on Times Table Rockstar. Times tables are incredibly important in all areas of Maths and a fast and confident recall of them really helps.
• Practise the list of spellings that are sent home. We will be continuing with the words sent out last week and will have the spelling check for these on Monday 27th January. Please let me know of you need another copy of these.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and if you have any questions then please do ask.
