Blakemere's Weekly Blog - 18.10.2024
Date: 19th Oct 2024 @ 9:04pm
Another great week, this week, in Blakemere and the children are continuing to impress me with how hard they are working and the work they are producing.
English
We are coming towards the end of our narrative unit in English based on ‘The Watertower’ by Gary Crew. The children have continued to explore and write using the passive voice and have also planned their final piece of writing. They are going to be writing ‘missing pages’ from the text where they describe what they think happened to one of the characters, Bubba, whilst he was alone at the watertower.
Maths
In Maths, we have continued to focus on addition and subtraction. We have explored using a number line to count on when the numbers are close together. We found this method to be extremely helpful when finding the difference with money or decimals. We have also added and subtracted decimal numbers and then finally solved some word problems involving addition and subtraction. I was incredibly impressed with how the children tackled these problems.
History
This week, we looked at some of the different passengers that were aboard the Titanic and explored why they were on the ship. We used the information about these passengers to create a fact file about them. We also listened to some survivors’ stories from the fateful night of the sinking of the Titanic.
Science
In Science, this week, we became Taxonomists. We imagined that we had discovered a new specie of animal. We had to draw and label the new specie and write a description about it detailing its appearance, habitat, how it breaths and whether it was warm or cold blooded. We also had to give it a name.
Play Leaders
We had our second play leader training session this week and we had to lead activities for Year 1 children in the hall. Children will start in their play leader role after half term.
Well done
A huge well done this week to Zac for winning the raffle ticket prize and to Arabella, Lexi-May, Haley, Holly and Michael for having their work selected for Excellent Examples. They will bring this work home with them next Thursday to share with you. Finally, a huge well done to Franklin for being selected as Worker of the Week in Blakemere by their peers.
Secret Question
Share our class blog with your child and send them in with the answer to this secret question to earn themselves some raffle tickets:
Mrs M spends £7.86. How much change would she get from £20?
What can you do at home?
- Ensure your child has prepared themselves for the week ahead by having their reading book in school with them every day.
- PE is on a Monday and Thursday so please ensure that your child has the correct PE kit in on those days. Appropriate footwear is also encouraged.
- Read with your child and encourage them to find books and reading materials that they are interested in. I am also always happy to help and recommend books if needed. Please record this reading each day on the online reading log. A new link is sent to you from Learning with Parents each week. I absolutely love reading the comments, seeing the photographs and hearing the audio clips of the children reading.
- Encourage your child to practise their times tables on Times Table Rockstar. Times tables are incredibly important in all areas of Maths and a fast and confident recall of them really helps.
- We have our trip to Chester Zoo on Thursday.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and if you have any questions then please do ask.
