Blakemere's Weekly Blog - 21.03.2025

Date: 23rd Mar 2025 @ 9:00am

The weeks are continuing to fly by here in Blakemere, but it was so nice that we are finally getting some brighter and warmer weather.

English
We are continuing to read the book, The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde in English and using this as a driver for our work. This week, we have explored using a formal register in writing known as the subjunctive form. Simply, this refers to using ‘If I were’ in sentences to pose a hypothetical or fantasy situation. In response to this the children wrote a poem about if they were a giant and then went on to write about if they were a form of weather what would they wear, how would they behave and act and what sort of person they would be. They also used personification to bring the weather to life.

Maths
This week, we have started our geometry unit in maths which is focusing on shape and angles. We have recapped on the names and properties of different angles and then practised using a protractor to both measure and accurately draw angles. We have then move on to finding missing angles on a straight line.

Science
This week in Science, we explored how light is reflected of an object. We explored using a torch and mirror where the reflected light would be and then drew diagrams to represent our findings. We learnt that the ray from the light source is called the incident ray and that the ray of light reflecting off the object is called the reflected ray. We also learnt that these are equal.

History
In History, we have continued to explore the salt industry here in Winsford by looking at the salt mining industry. We have looked at when the mine opened, have explored photographs of past and present mining activity and watched video of footage of the mine in use. The children have been producing piece of work which details the difference in the salt mine industry over time by looking at mining methods, entering the mine, excavating and removing the salt and tools used.

Well done
A huge well done this week to Joshua for winning the raffle ticket prize and to Arabella, Rosabeller, Zac, Eva E and Holly for having their work selected for Excellent Examples. They will bring this work home with them next Friday to share with you. Well done to Roey for achieving his silver reading badge. We also have some other children very close to either their bronze or silver reading badges over the next couple of weeks so keep reading. Another well done to Haley and Quinn for being selected as Blakemere’s Workers of the Week by their peers.

Year 6 SATS
On our class webpage, there is lots of information regarding the Year 6 SATS week, which begins Monday 12th May to Thursday 15th May 2025. More information about these will be sent out closer to the time along with information about our Year 6 breakfast club that week.

Secret Question
Share our class blog with your child and send them in with the answer to this secret question to earn themselves some raffle tickets:
Name an angle.

What can you do at home?
•    Ensure your child has prepared themselves for the week ahead by having their reading book in school with them every day.
•    PE is on a Monday and Thursday so please ensure that your child has the correct PE kit in on those days. Appropriate footwear is also encouraged. We will continue to be outside for PE on Monday’s along as it is not raining so it is incredibly important that the children have jogging bottoms to wear.
•    Read with your child and encourage them to find books and reading materials that they are interested in. I am also always happy to help and recommend books if needed. Please record this reading each day on the online reading log. A new link is sent to you from Learning with Parents each week. I absolutely love reading the comments, seeing the photographs and hearing the audio clips of the children reading.
•    Encourage your child to practise their times tables on Times Table Rockstar. Times tables are incredibly important in all areas of Maths and a fast and confident recall of them really helps.
•    Practise the list of spellings that are sent home. Please let me know of you need another copy of these.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and if you have any questions then please do ask.
