Blakemere's Weekly Blog 25.04.2025
Date: 26th Apr 2025 @ 4:50pm
It has been so lovely been back in class with team Blakemere this week after the Easter Holidays and considering it was only a four-day week, we seemed to have achieved so much.
English
We are continuing to read the book, The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde in English and using this as a driver for our work. This week, we have recapped on accurately punctuating direct speech and exploring how we can use speech in narrative to tell us something about the character and to move the action forward. The children then produced a speech sandwich based on one of the scenes from the book. Towards the end of the week, the children retold a scene from the book thinking about character and action and they were superb to read.
Maths
This week, we have been exploring different units of measure, converting between these measures, reading scales and then solving problems involving the different measurements. So far, we have explored capacity (ml and l), weight/mass (g and kg) and length (mm, cm and m).
History
In History, we have explored what evidence remains in Winsford of the sat work factories that used to line the banks of the River Weaver. We have found from our research that very little evidence remains, but the salt statues that are present in Town Park are to act as a reminder of the town’s past. We spent some during this lesson looking at what the different parts of these statues represent. Why not ask you child what they can remember about them?
Well done
A huge well done this week to Roey for winning the raffle ticket prize and to Phoebe, Natalie, Lexi-May, Mia and Kobe for having their work selected for Excellent Examples. They will bring this work home with them next Friday to share with you. Well done to Frankie and Arabella for achieving their bronze reading badges. We also have some other children very close to either their bronze or silver reading badges over the next couple of weeks so keep reading. Another well done to Ava K for being selected as Blakemere’s Workers of the Week by her peers.
Year 6 SATS
On our class webpage, there is lots of information regarding the Year 6 SATS week, which begins Monday 12th May to Thursday 15th May 2025. More information about these will be sent out closer to the time along with information about our Year 6 breakfast club that week. We have also started some revision in class, which we will do over the next few weeks in the run up to SATS.
Secret Question
Share our class blog with your child and send them in with the answer to this secret question to earn themselves some raffle tickets:
How many ml are in a l?
What can you do at home?
• Ensure your child has prepared themselves for the week ahead by having their reading book in school with them every day. I will be checking this every day next week as we have some children who do not have their book with them regularly.
• PE is on a Monday and Thursday so please ensure that your child has the correct PE kit in on those days. Appropriate footwear is also encouraged. We will continue to be outside for PE on Monday’s along as it is not raining so it is incredibly important that the children have jogging bottoms to wear.
• Year 6 swimming starts 28th April. Please make sure your children has their swimming costume, goggles and a towel with them for this.
• Read with your child and encourage them to find books and reading materials that they are interested in. I am also always happy to help and recommend books if needed. Please record this reading each day on the online reading log. A new link is sent to you from Learning with Parents each week. I absolutely love reading the comments, seeing the photographs and hearing the audio clips of the children reading.
• Encourage your child to practise their times tables on Times Table Rockstar. Times tables are incredibly important in all areas of Maths and a fast and confident recall of them really helps.
• Practise the list of spellings that are sent home. Please let me know of you need another copy of these.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and if you have any questions then please do ask.
