Delamere Remembers

Date: 12th Nov 2021 @ 12:50pm

This week we have learnt about remembrance through our history lessons with a focus on who we are remembering, the significance of these individuals and the impact of the actions of those that fought in war.  Through a range of historical sources including photographs from WWI and WWII and first had experiences from our OSJ families we considered the impact of war on family life.  It has been so wonderful to hear about our local heroes and also from grandparents who were youngsters during WWII and their own memories including hearing the air raid sirens and rushing to the air raid shelters but forgetting their trousers in the process!  We discussed war memorials and their significance and will continue this work next week.

We shared some wonderful texts including Flo of the Somme and Stubby - which led us to talk about the role of animals during the war too.  The children showed great compassion and understanding when considering those that were injured, cared for and protected. One child noticed the compassion of animals in a remembrance clip https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b04p4zsl/poppies and expressed how God would be proud of them because the animals stayed together and protected one another with love.  We thought this was a beautiful way of looking at things. 'The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love'.  In addition to photographs, war stories, texts and animations we also tried our hand at using water and Brusho (paint crystals) to create poppies.  The images attached show how simply gorgeous they are.

On Thursday we imagined that we were cooking during WW2, thinking about the sacrifices and challenges people faced during this time. The children all received their own ration book and designed their own version of a Wartime Vegetable Turnover. I was so impressed with the cooking skills that the children used, sieving, mixing, measuring, rolling and chopping! Well done Delamere. It was great to hear the children's verdicts of what they had created, with some children saying they were yummy and others saying the pastry was a bit hard! Thank you to those children who wrote down their ideas. We will return to this later in the term to see how we could improve the recipe.

Well done to our Numbots winners Ava, Keiya and Connie and to our Excellent Examples Marley, Evie and Kizzy.

Have a great weekend and we will see you for more learning and fun next week.
