Delamere's Weekly Blog - 2.12.22

Date: 2nd Dec 2022 @ 6:17pm

It has been an exciting week this week as we entered into the wonderful season of Advent! The children were excited to explore our class Advent calendar and we hope you had fun opening your first couple of doors at home too. MAF is an amazing charity that provide flights for 2000 aid, development and mission organisations to enable them to transform lives. It has been great to find out about their founding members and begin our journey around the world. I wonder where we will go next!

In English we have started to read the first few pages of our new book, ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark’ and on Monday the children were lucky enough to have Mrs Snowdon who looked at how we can change words into adverbs by adding –ly, and the children thought of some great words such as changing slow into slowly, smooth into smoothly and soft into softly. We then used these words throughout our writing for the rest of the week and we were very impressed with the confidence that the class showed when using these words to describe Plop the owl’s flight.

“Plop was standing carefully on the edge of the branch and nervously jumped off!”

“He bravely jumped off the branch and glided gracefully to the ground.”

“Plop flapped his wings quickly and landed gently in the long, green grass below.”

Super effort Delamere!

In Maths we have continued to work on our adding by making ten and have moved onto using this strategy by drawing onto ten frames, a tricky skill that required lots of concentration but we all had a really good go. We are also getting much faster at recalling our number bonds to ten, a skill which we will be using next week as we move into adding three 1-digti numbers. Please don’t forget to practise regularly using the Numbots game.

We had a super History session this week, learning all about Florence Nightingale’s journey to Scutari and exploring the what conditions she found in the hospitals there. We explored a variety of historical sources, including a painting, a drawing and an extract from a newspaper article and began to think about which were the most reliable and how, as historians, we can use a variety of resources to build a clearer picture of the past.

This week we have been learning our song for the Christmas service and each child should have brought home a lyrics sheet. Please do encourage your child to practise so that we can do a super job in our Christmas service on Wednesday 14th December. It is a lovely bouncy number about the Wisemen which links brilliantly with our RE Incarnation unit, in which we are exploring what Christians can learn about Jesus from the visit of the Wisemen.

Our big WELL DONE this week goes to Adelaide, Toby and Danielle and our excellent examples go to Drita, Savannah and Adelaide. Don't forget to practise your spellings and keep up with your reading everone.

We hope that you have a fantastic weekend and look forward to more fun and learning next week.
