Date: 21st Sep 2018 @ 6:30pm

The focus for our Collective Worship this week has been kindness. We have talked about the many stories in the Bible where Jesus showed kindness to others, for example, when he healed Jarius’ daughter, when he showed kindness to Zacchaeus when others didn’t and also the story of David and the wife of Nabal, Abigail, who showed lots of kindness to David and his men. The children were asked on Monday to show kindness to others throughout the week so that they could share what they have been up to – I wondered if you noticed your children doing anything extra special for you at home this week? Please let me know!

Also this week, we welcomed John Jones back into school. John has been a friend of Over St. John’s for many years and helps the school to find out and develop aspects of school life by using Year 5 children as researchers. This year John will be working with Kayleigh, Daniel, Olivia, James, Lily and Connor to find out about how we celebrate diversity at Over St. John’s. The children will be observing lessons, interviewing pupils and staff and may even interview some parents this year. They will be collecting all their findings and putting them together to present to a conference at Portal Macdonald hotel in March. At this conference the children will also get to see what the other schools in the project have been finding out about in their schools – so watch this space!

Below is some fantastic work that Lucia in Year 4 shared with me earlier this week where the class were focussing on prepositional phrases in a setting description. Also, congratulations to Emmy in Linmere on receiving her Pen Licence this week – the first one this year!

“And every night the old man dreamed. He dreamed he lived in a forest full of gleaming parrots, swooping and looping around the trees. The tropical and exotic flowers are gazing at the bright sun that smiles. A camouflaged tiger roaming the forest looks fierce, a beautiful butterfly flutters its emerald green wings across the fluorescent forest. A hungry tree frog leaps towards it’s lunch. High up in the sky, the bright orange beak that belongs to a toucan shines above the clouds. A majestic tiger that prowls among the towering trees is hunting for its prey.”

I would like to share with you the sad news that Wyn Reynolds passed away on 8th September. Many of you who have had older children in school will recognise Wyn for the 17 plus years that he has been coming to Over St. John’s to deliver the Bible Explorer sessions with Blakemere class. He was a truly inspirational man who brought the Bible alive for the children each week in a fun and exciting way. I had the privilege of attending his ‘Celebration of Life’ service this afternoon and it was a true testament to what a wonderful man he was. He will be greatly missed.
