Hatchmere Reading Blog

Hello.

We have had a fantastic first week in school and Mrs Teece and I are amazed at how quickly the children have seemed to settle.  The children have been exploring the environment and getting to know each other.  We have found out that they love playing in the water, the home corner and outside.  We have also found out that our children love a story and if they are not bringing books to us to read they are looking at books and creating their own stories.

To encourage this love of reading and books we will be sending home a simple book with no words for you to share with your child.  The idea behind books without words is that the children become comfortable with creating their own stories by looking at the pictures.  We are looking for your child to be able to sit down, hold the book the right way round, turn the pages and tell us about the book.  Once your child has shown that they have these important skills they will move onto books with words.  This is the first step on your child’s reading journey and to encourage that love of books that is so important we would recommend that you make reading time a special positive time for you and your child.

We will send home a reading diary, several reading books and a picture book from the class library for you to read and talk about with your child.  Please keep these books and diary at home during the week and send them in on Friday to be exchanged. We will check everyone’s reading diary on Friday to see what reading has been completed at home. Ideally we would like you to read as often as possible and put a comment or signature, from an adult, in the diary on the days you hear your child read.

We will be reading with your child in school and will be keeping a record of this in school and not in the reading diary.  This is to minimise the number of people touching your child’s book.  Copies of the notes taken by adults in school can be requested at any time.  If you have any queries or concerns about reading please do not hesitate to get in contact with me at admin@overstjohns.cheshire.sch.uk

Thank you

Mrs Kelly and Mrs Teece
