Head Teacher Blog: Friday 13th January 2023

Date: 13th Jan 2023 @ 9:48am

It has been quite a quiet week in school this week as everyone has been busy getting on with the business of learning and having fun. I would like to give a special mention to the children in Year 5 and 6 who attended an indoor athletics competition yesterday after school at The Winsford Academy. I was fortunate to be able to accompany them with Mr Pasquill, so I saw first-hand how fantastic they were. They showed excellent sportsmanship and their behaviour was exemplary, as always. We don’t have any results to share with you as yet because the event is being held over a couple of afternoons with different schools taking part at each one, but I will keep you informed!

St. John’s Film Night

This week in Collective Worship with Eddie from St. Johns, the children voted for which film they would like to see at the next church film night. It was tough with the three options being Moanna, Paddington and Lightyear but this time, Lightyear came out on top. If you would like to go and see Lightyear with no ticket cost and with hotdogs, popcorn and drinks, it will be screening in St. John’s Church Hall at 4.30pm on Sunday 29th January.

Winsford Decides

You may have seen information in the local Guardian with regards to ‘Winsford Decides’ that we have been asked to share. Winsford Decides is an opportunity for the people in Winsford to bid for between £250 and £5000 to undertake a project to improve an aspect of the town. Full details are contained in this Winsford Decides link, so if you have an idea that you think can make a difference to the town – take a look. Or take a look at the suggestions on the link anyway as you may just be inspired!

#WakeUpWednesday

World of Warcraft originally launched way back in 2004 and since then the game has blossomed into a major entertainment property. It’s spawned spin-off novels, merchandise and even a Hollywood movie adaptation, but why are we still talking about it in 2023? World of Warcraft’s most recent iteration, Dragonflight, launched last November and marks the game’s ninth major expansion. This latest addition has attracted a whole host of lapsed players back to the game – as well as newcomers jumping into the realm of Azeroth for the first time.

In this week’s National Online Safety guide, you'll find tips on a number of potential risks such as the potential for online addiction, in-game purchases and simulated violence.

School Dinners

School dinners cost £2.45 per day, £12.25 per week. Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 receive free meals as part of the government’s Universal Infant Free School Meals (UIFSM) scheme.  Dinner money must be paid in advance via School Spider as we do not accept cash in school.

If you are in receipt of benefits and think that you may be entitled to free school meals, please click here for more information and support and how to apply. It is very important to apply for free schools meals whatever year your child is in, even if you receive the UIFSM in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, as the school receives a sum of extra money to further help support your child and their education.

Absence during Term Time

Please may I remind you that schools are not allowed to authorise pupil holidays in term time. Any child going on holiday in term time will receive an unauthorised absence. Our registers are regularly checked by the Education Welfare Service and parents may be issued with a fine from the Local Authority for unauthorised absence, which is currently £60 per child, per parent and this rises to £120 if paid after 21 days but within 28 days.
