National School Sports Week - Year 5/6 Football
Date: 23rd Jun 2016 @ 9:59pm
After a quick lunch and well earned cup of tea, we were off again to Wharton School for an afternoon of football for year 5/6. Again we were lucky enough to take two teams, the yellows and the blues! There were 11 teams taking part and we knew it was going to be tough as many of the children playing played in local teams and were well drilled in all aspects of playing the game.
Our yellows started proceedings against Grange B. We were thrilled to see Jacob score his first ever goal for Over St. John's and his celebrations afterwards certainly were something to behold. . We worked hard and managed to keep that scoreline until the final whistle. Their second game was against Wharton A team and we were well and truly beaten with a final score of 5-0 to Wharton! Our players tried their best at all times and never once bowed their heads. A special thank you to Brodie, who never thought he could play football, who went on and defended brilliantly with a smile on his face at all times. Well done yellows!
The blues started their campaign with a wonderful 3 -0 beating inflicted on Wharton B with goals scored by Harry, Aaron and Max W. With confidence flowing we faced Willow Wood A and were treated to a goalline clearance from Ellie that then produced a superb glancing header from Will B, straight into the back of the opposition's net. The field of players were all stunned and there seemed to be a minute silence until the celebrations began in earnest. Our third game was against Over Hall and ended as a 0-0 draw.
That trio of results was enough to get us through to the semi-finals where we were to meet St. Chad's. A thrilling game ensued and OSJ had most of the possession throughout the match but were unable to score the vital goal. The final whistle blew - a 0-0 draw - but this time we had to play 2 minutes extra time...
Two minutes of sweat and toil, with endless attacks on goal by our players. We could see this was not going our way and heads began to drop. St. Chad's were a good team and absorbed all the pressure to then breakaway and score a goal . The final whistle blew. We had lost!
Hot, tired and thirsty, we boarded the bus back to school, so near and yet so far!!
