Sandymere - Week 6

Date: 26th Apr 2020 @ 9:12pm

Hello there Sandymere Superstars!

We hope that you have had a lovely weekend. What a hot day it was on Saturday! For us, it meant a walk to feed the ducks, playing in the shade painting with water on our patio, drawing outside on a roll of old wallpaper and a cheeky BBQ. We also had a scone incident, as I got muddled up when reading the recipe and instead of making 8 cheese scones, me and Annie made enough dough to make 48!! Whoops! It wasn't all bad though because it meant we could share our creations with some of our neighbours. I think I will leave Annie in charge of the recipe next time. Did you manage to complete any of the baking ideas from our last blog? If you did I hope that you were more successful than me! Sunday was a much more relaxed day, enjoying time sharing books together and writing letters to our friends.

The weather forecast is not looking as bright this week so you might be looking for some activities to do indoors. We have gathered some together below but once again, please do not feel under any pressure to get through them all, if any.

In our last blog we metioned some phonics sessions beginning on Monday 27th April. This is the link to the website. The sessions will be uploaded on Monday morning and will hopefully be a good wat to keep up our fantastic phonic skills.

The White Rose Maths Team have released their weekly maths sessions for the Summer Term. They have Week 1 and Week 2. The videos are really simple and the problems are supported using the models and images that we use in school so the children should find it all very familiar. You may just watch the video together and then explore the skills in your own way, or you might like to print the activties and use as a workbook. If you don't have a printer, you could look at the activity and talk through or make your own notes on paper. I would start with week 1 and work through from there, as the sessions are progressive.

In DT during the Spring term, we had began to look at the book 'Queen Victoria's Bathing Machine'. Maybe you could tell your grown up what happens in the story.

Queen Victoria's Bathing Machine: Amazon.co.uk: Whelan, Gloria ...

We had started to look at the design features of a Victorian bathing machine, looking at images of the actual bathing machine used by Queen Victoria herself. Follow this link to watch a video about Queen Victoria's bathing machine.

DT Challenge: Can you design your own bathing machine? Remember the purpose is to keep the Queen from being seen in her bathing suit whilst also transporting across the beach to the sea.

Think about what you could use to make a model of your design. Maybe you could make a list of materials and equipment that you might need to use. What will you use to join the different parts together? How will you make your structure strong?

Art - Maybe you could have a go at following this drawing tutorial to draw your very own beach scene? You may want to ask your grown up to keep pausing the video so that you can have a good look at each mark that the artist makes and have a go at addng it to your picture. Don't worry if it doesn't look exactly like the picture in the video as art is about expressing our individuality and your art work can be just as unique as you are.

Story Time - You have probably already seen that the wonderful Julia Donaldson is sharing weekly song and story sessions every Thursday. They can be found on her facebook page, and I particularly love her reading, or I should say singing, of the story 'A Squash and a Squeeze', a story that we can probably all relate to at the moment. I also think that this story is one of our Sandymere superstars favourite books, is that right Jacob? I know it is one of mine.

Whatever you get up to this week, we hope that you have lots of fun.

Stay safe, keep smiling and we will catch up again very soon.
