Sandymere - Week 8
Date: 10th May 2020 @ 1:55pm
Hello Super Sandymere,
We hope that you are all getting on well and managing to find lots of fun things to do at home. Did you do anything exciting to celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day? Me, Annie and Josie had a go at making our own decorations and decorated our front garden. We don't normally sit out on the front so it was really exciting to set up our table and chairs there with some blankets and a much needed sun parasol. We paused at 11:00 to remember the people who didn't come back from the war and could hear somebody in the distance playing 'The Last Post' on their bugle. It was a very moving moment that will stay with me for a long time. Then we enjoyed a delicious picnic whilst listening to wartime music and it was so wonderful to see lots of our neighbours doing the same. Annie got in touch with her Great Nannie who wrote her some very interesting emails with all of her memories of VE Day and it was great to find out what it was really like for her back then. Mrs Williamson and her family decorated their house with bunting and posters for VE Day and had a traditional tea party in their front drive complete with cups and saucers. We all know how much Mrs Williamson LOVES a cup of tea! They also enjoyed a sing a long to 'We'll meet again' with the neighbours.
Maths
The National Oak Academy have a set of 10 lessons looking at numbers 50 to 100 that you might like to have a look at. They each have a video and a follow on activity. They are in sequence so work through them in the order that they are on the website.

Place Value Basketball is also a good game to work on place value and counting in tens and ones.

Alongside this work, practising counting in steps of ten will help. I have attached some links below for songs to help and also some games to reinforce this skill.

Phonics
Classroom Secrets is another website with lots of free resources. The phonic games in particular might be useful to keep those super sonic phonic skills up! You may need to create an account to access the resources but I did so very easily and for free.

You could keep labelling items around the house and add sound buttons to the words. See previous blogs for photos for ideas.
Reading
Here is a link to a reading comprehension activity. How about having a go at the 'Summer Rain' activity, reading the sentences and then completing the tasks.

Attached below is also a useful sheet called 'Reading Prompts', which is great to use alongside reading and sharing books and will really help to support your child's comprehension skills. Remember, if nothing else, please do keep reading with your children.
Spelling
Below is a pack of activities to help practise the reading and spelling of all of those Year 1 Common Exception Words. There is a lovely mixture of activities, such as Bingo, Snap and wordsearches so hopefully you can find something in their that takes your fancy.
Writing
If you fancy doing some writing this week, then look no further. Below are some writing prompt activities, for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday all on the theme of the seaside. Don't forget that you can also sign up to Pobble for free for more writing inspiration.
Geography
Take a look at our home learning page for some geography based activities in the files that relate to your home and locality. There are some lovely topic based activities that are easy to access and lot so fun too.
We hope that you have a good week, whether it be completing some of the tasks here or doing something completely different, all that we ask is that you keep safe, keep smiling and we will catch up again very soon.
