Sandymere Learning Update 8.3.18

Date: 8th Mar 2018 @ 10:08am

This week seems to be whizzing by!

There’s been a huge excitement within Sandymere this week with the discovery of some bones! Additional discoveries included a jigsaw that revealed the image of a woolly mammoth stood right outside our school and next to the cross! This generated lots of discussion with some excellent suggestions and predictions. The children went on to write questions about the discovery, write predictions and create descriptions of the woolly mammoth using noun phrases. What a curious discovery! Perhaps we will find out what is going on next week?

Also this week the children have created fact files about woolly mammoths. They watched some interesting clips to gather information and then used this information to label the different parts of the mammoths body and describe them n more detail. SECRET TASK ALERT – perhaps your child could gather some more information about woolly mammoths or even create their own using collage materials such a wool or string for the fur?

In maths we have been exploring numbers to 50 using Base 10 materials. The children are growing in confidence and using their knowledge of counting in 10s to work out how the tens number changes. We used the following games and sites within class to practise this.

In phonics we have continued to practise common exception words with this week challenging word being ‘laughed’. We have also looked at alternative sounds for ‘e’ such as he, she, we, and bed, ted, red.

All children have now been checked using the Benchmarking Assessment for their reading. There have been many children moving colour bands – well done. Keep up the hard work and regular reading at home. Guided reading resumes again next week where we will start looking at traditional tales.

Don’t forget it’s Sandymere Tuck shop tomorrow – thank you to those who have already sent treats into school. You’re very organised!

See you next week
