Sandymere Learning Update 9.3.17

Date: 9th Mar 2017 @ 10:00am

This week has been busy, busy, busy and the children have taken part in a whole host of exciting activities.

In Literacy we have begun to look at instructions. We began by exploring imperative verbs and played reverse Simon says… Even I got confused at times which created such giggles! The children were able to come up with a wide variety of verbs and used these in their writing of ‘silly instructions’ which Mrs Millington (parent helper) and I had to act out. There were instructions such as:

Walk like a camel.

Jump on a trampoline.

Google your eyes!

I’m certain we looked as daft as we felt! We have concentrated on the importance of giving clear instructions and used our listening to skills to hear instructions of ‘how to draw a pigeon’. The children were excellent at this and drew pigeons very similar to the instructions given. Perhaps you could play this game at home too? The children loved it. We have also looked at sequencing words used for writing instructions such as first, next, after that and wrote ‘How to make a sandwich’. Well done children!

A big SHOUT OUT to Faye for collecting contractions from her reading book. She found 14! Meaning she received 14 raffle tickets. Well done Faye. J Don’t forget you can still do this for next week. Simply write them out and hand them to me on Monday.

In maths we have been using the balance scales to measure weight. We began by predicting how heavy each item was then carried out the investigation. There were many surprises along the way and we quickly realised that our sense of touch for weight wasn’t as accurate as we thought as holding the teddy felt light however it was much heavier. We have also been counting forwards and back to/from 100. Please practise this at home. Counting forwards is quite secure but counting backwards still needs some work.

This week we had an assembly about Fairtrade. All the children were asked to look out for the Fairtrade symbol in the shops. In Sandymere we explored where different Fairtrade foods came from and used maps and atlases to find and label the countries. Great job!

SHOUT OUT to Lacey for bringing the chocolate wrapper displaying the symbol. (It’s a shame the chocolate had already been eaten!) Five raffle tickets were given. Your child can also receive raffle tickets if they too spot Fairtrade items. You could take a photo of them holding the item if you don’t wish to purchase it.

This week we have also used the apparatus in PE with Mrs Smith and completed lots and lots of phonics practise tasks. Remember to keep practising your real and alien words at home and don’t forget to make me an alien for our phonics display. It can be painted, collaged, modelled from junk modelling materials or made out of play doh. All that I ask is that it is of a high quality and comes with an alien name! Enjoy.

Phew! As I said busy, busy, busy.

See you all on Monday.
