Sandymere Learning Update 25.5.17
Date: 25th May 2017 @ 11:08am
It was so lovely to see so many parents and carers supporting our annual sport’s day yesterday. Although I didn’t attend myself (I was in a meeting) I did manage to pop up briefly and see the children making a tremendous effort and show great sportsmanship. The gorgeous weather was an added bonus!
Another event this week has been our class assembly all about Thankfulness. The children did a wonderful job singing ‘We Thank You Lord’ and I was so proud of them for singing on their own and in duets. They showed real confidence! Well done boys and girls. Mrs M from Oakmere loved is so much that she awarded every child 2 raffle tickets! J
In maths we have been reviewing 2D and 3D shapes. The children are improving in their recognition of shapes however find this more challenging in their own environment. Perhaps you could help your child seek and find shapes around the house and encourage them to describe their properties e.g
Cube – 6 square faces, 12 corners, 12 edges, 3D
Circle – 1 curved side, no comers, and 2D
As the phonics screening test for all Year 1 children nationally is the week beginning 12th June we have been practising hard this week segmenting and blending real and alien words. For homework I am sending home a past Phonics Screening Test from 2013 for you to work through with your child. There are also many more available to download from the Internet. Simply Google ‘Phonics Screening Test’ and you can pick one out to try. Also if you head to the phonics tab on our class page you will find many links to phonics games your child could try too. Make sure your child is practising the PHASE 5 words and sounds please on these games. I understand accessibility varies depending on the device but most should work on a PC or laptop. Alternatively download ‘Flash Player’ and the games should work on tablets.
I hope you all have a wonderful half term and continue to enjoy the sunshine. I won’t be in on 5th June (Mrs Jones will be in) so I’ll see you on Tuesday.
Have fun!
Mrs Williamson
