Good morning,

What a sunny morning it is!  Much better than the rain and hail we have been experiencing recently.

It's been a short but busy week with lots of learning taking place in Year 2.  Starting with the introduction of our new book in English called  Major Glad, Major Dizzy which is centered around some old toys.  We started by looking at some old toys that belonged to me many, many years ago that have been lurking in the loft.  The children were then tasked with writing and asking questions about these toys.  Such interesting and lovely questions were asked which led to some nostalgic memories on my part.  I asked if the children had any old toys in their homes that perhaps belonged to their parents - it might be worth rummaging these out and talking to your child about them.  They were all really fascinated and engaged when talking about the past when in school so it would be lovely to extend this to home too.  Also in English we have been exploring lots of new vocabulary including words such as splintery, dainty.  We have been finding out the meanings of these words and working out which word classes they fit in to.

In Maths we have been exploring odd and even numbers and transferring these numbers to equal grouping and multiplication. We played the  Odd Even Coconut Game  interactively - perhaps your child could play it at home too?  Don't forget to login in to Numbots and Times Tables Rockstars every week as part of your child's weekly math homework.  Mrs Worstencroft is checking regularly and awarding certificates to those on the leader board each week.  Numbots and Times Table Rockstars are excellent ways to speed up mental maths recall and practicing number skills in a fun and engaging way.

Don't forget to keep practicing the weekly spellings with your child ready for a spelling check each Friday.  The new sets of spellings are posted weekly on the Friday blog.

Thank you for so many of you for reading regularly with your child.  We are hoping to benchmark some more children soon and can't wait to see how many have moved forward in their reading progress.  In school we are engaging with your child's reading through twice weekly guided reading sessions - our current focus text is Hotel Flamingo which is such a wonderful story about a group of animals renovating an old hotel!  There are lots of inference opportunities within the text and the children's predictions have been fabulous.

Have a wonderful few days!
