13.5.16 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 13th May 2016 @ 1:29pm

Well I've just noticed that last week's blog doesn't seem to appear - the joys of technology, so I shall combine the two weeks in this blog.

In Literacy we are turned our attention to reinforcing our basic skills in writing.  At this stage in Year 1 we hope that all children are constructing their sentences with capital letters, full stops and clear finger spaces.  The children are doing well however we need them to be doing this in all their writing across the curriculum and independently wherever possible.  In order to reinforce these skills the children have been practising their writing through our theme of Superheroes. We would appreciate it if you allow time for children to write at home too so they can show off their capital letters, full stops and finger spaces to you too.

In maths the children have been applying their mathematical skills to investigations.  So far this week we have investigated

length – measuring body parts using a tape measure

weight – predicting heaviest and lightest and using balance scales to check their predictions

capacity – looking at how much water a container can hold and comparing them

In addition to this, we have continued to practise our mental recall of counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and our bonds to 10 and 20.

To complete our seahorses display, this week the children have been creating their own seahorses out of paper plates and decorating them using buttons and sequins.  Do pop in to take a look – they are beautiful!

As the phonics screening is just around the corner in June we have been double dosing phonics practise through lots of fun games and even created our own aliens and alien words.  The children have been amazing and are working SO hard on their phonics.  Keep practising at home too.

In Science the children have been labelling their body parts and exploring what each part of their body can do.

Busy, busy as ever!
