14.02.2020 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 14th Feb 2020 @ 10:40am

That's another half term complete which means the children have already completed half of their time in Year 1.  How time flies!  We can't wait to share all the children's lovely work with you at parent's evening after half term, we are sure you'll be very impressed with the children's progress.

In english this week the children have been incredibly busy writing their own versions of The Lion Inside.  With the change of characters to bear and hedgehog, the children have tried hard to capture the story of a seemingly scary grizzly bear and a shy hedgehog.  Who knew that bear would be so scared of the hedgehog?!  We have some lovely stories and great examples of children using capital letters and full stops in their writing along with words that use the suffixes er, est and ed and some fabulous adjectives!  That's a whole lot of skills taking place.  Well done children.

In maths we have been looking at addition using a range of models and methods and have now moved forward to subtraction.  We were really pleased with how well the children have adapted their models and images from addition to subtraction this week and some children could even see how they work together.

Mrs Pile had another enjoyable PE session with the children and was again very pleased with their efforts.  It is always lovely to hear such postive feedback.

On Monday we were treated to a flurry of snow - much to the excitement of both children and adults.  We were able to go outside and observe the snow first hand, describe its properties, watch it melt, and consider the changes in weather patterns in line with our seasons work in Science.  What a great opportunity for scientific investigation we had!  The children also loved running around try/ing to catch the snowflakes on their noses, faces and tongues.  Back in the classroom we recorded our findings and learnt to make mini snowflakes using paper and scissors.  Perhaps you could try this at home too ove the half term?  A SHOUT OUT to Holly who has already brought in some snowflakes she made at home with her Mummy.

A massive thank you to all the children who have brought in books from home for us to share as a class. Books are so precious and such a pleasure to share.  We were so pleased that Franklyn, Joshua and Annie chose to read books to the whole class.  Such confident and expressive reading.  If your child would also like to read a book to the class then half term is the perfect time to practise reading their favourite story ready to bring in after the break.

All library books, reading books and phonicially decodable books have been changed and guided reading has taken place.  This is stamped in your child's reading diary.  We were once again without a few reading diaries though so weren't able to stamp them all.  Please can we ask that all reading materials are in school every day.  Thank you.

This week for Collective Worship we considered how we can be caring and sharing.  We considered this in class and said thank you to people who have shown us a caring and sharing attitude.  We then talked about how Jesus and others in the Bible showed their postive attributes.  The children were able to name stories such as the boy who shared his food with Jesus so that he could cater for the wedding with the loaves and the fishes.

Have a wonderful break and don't foget we return to school on TUESDAY 25Th February.
