Term-by-Term Overview

Term 1

Term 2 teaches the National Curriculum Year 2 graphemes (dge, g, c, kn, gn, wr, le, el, il, al, y, al, o, ey, w-a, w-or, w-ar, s, t, i). Skills focus on blending and segmenting of decodable words alongside the reading and spelling of the Year 2 CEWs. Most of the spelling rules, including the rules for adding vowel suffixes – the drop e, double consonant and y to an i rule are also taught alongside homophones. Progression is cumulative with each lesson focusing only on decodable words that use graphemes that have been taught so far.

Term 2

Term 2 completes the teaching of spelling rules with a focus on consonant suffixes, contractions and possessive apostrophes. From week 2, grapheme revision lessons commence, focused around mini fiction texts. Each revision week culminates in a writing task that encourages children to use their phonics and grammatical skills and knowledge in their writing.

Term 3

Term 3 continues with grapheme revision lessons, focused around mini fiction texts. Each revision week culminates in a writing task that encourages children to use their phonics and grammatical skills and knowledge in their writing.
