15.9.16 Sandymere's Learning Update

Date: 15th Sep 2016 @ 9:42am

Well what an exciting week we have had!

We have been celebrating 100 years of Roald Dahl and what an honour! He has written some fabulous books during his time as an author and we in Sandymere have been immersed in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and what a treat it has been.

We started the week by sharing the first few chapters of the book and watched a couple of clips from the movie.  This helped us to understand more about the famous Willy Wonka and his factory, and the character Charlie.  Then on Tuesday the classroom and children’s kitchen were changed into the ‘Inventing Room’ and ‘Chocolate Room’ and the children were invited by GOLDEN TICKET invitation to create their own chocolates. (I’m sure you all enjoyed these yummy treats at home on Tuesday evening!) Whilst creating their chocolates the children were encouraged to think about the language needed for instructions such as first, next, after that and finally. We practised this orally then back in the classroom the children wrote the instructions themselves.  Perhaps they can tell you at home how they made the chocolates using the same instructional language?

The children have also enjoyed creating their own sweet wrappers and creating their own imaginary sweets in words and pictures.

Continuing the sweet theme, in maths the children used balance scales to weigh a range of sweets and chocolates.  They needed to predict which would be lighter/heavier.  We also looked at how the standard measurement of grams written on the packet actually told us the true weight. Also in maths we have focussed on the objective 'I can count to 20' and the children have learnt to use their new maths books in a very grown up way!

This week saw the introduction of ‘Dough Disco’ where the children used play doh to exercise their hands ready for handwriting practise. Lots of giggles were had by all!  We then began the more serious task of learning the cursive ‘a’.  The children did really well with this! A shout out to Isaac this week for his superb effort!

In other areas of the curriculum we went outside for PE and played team games to develop our listening skills.  The children were excellent! In science we have started looking at different materials in the environment.

On Thursday and Friday, the children will be exploring adjectives for sweets and making sweets kebabs with Mrs Jones.  Sounds like a lot of fun!

See you all next week!
