17.5.19 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 17th May 2019 @ 10:15am

What a wonderful week we have had. It was so lovely to see all the parents/carers at parents evening and share the children’s work books and progress across the curriculum.  Thank you for attending.

This week we have finished writing our own versions of Stanley’s Stick and what fabulous stories they are!  Mrs Worstencroft and I are very pleased with the children’s creativity and we can’t wait to read them all through.  Hopefully you got the chance to read them yourselves at parents evening.  Handwriting is a large focus of our attentions and many children are stepping up to the challenge of using the cursive script. Well done!

If your child tell you they’ve been upstairs and completed a phonics screening – don’t worry it’s just a practise!  We are familiarising the children with the room they’ll take the screening check in and also providing the opportunity for extra practise.  The national phonics screening check will take place in the week beginning 10th June.

In maths we have begun to look at repeated addition for multiplication and drawing on our skills of counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.  As always please practise this at home whenever possible as it will help your child to apply this in their mathematical learning.

We have been learning all things flowers and plants this week in science.  We had so much fun using magnifying glasses to look closely at flowers and then moved on to dissecting flowers into their different parts.  The children have produced some gorgeous flap books sharing their knowledge and understanding of the functions of different parts of plants including flower head, stem, leaves and roots.   Perhaps your child could explore their garden or surrounding area over the weekend and see if they can spots lots of different flowers and plants.

We are now completing our observations of the fourth season – summer.  The children have been looking at the trees in the area surrounding the school grounds and noting the changes.  We used these observations to help us to create a summer tree using finger painting. The finished pictures look beautiful!

Mrs Worstencroft has been looking at flavouring porridge in design and technology this week and the children really enjoyed trying out new and different flavours. I was hoping to try a little porridge myself when I called in on Thursday but they’d enjoyed it so much that they’d eaten it all up! I must collect copies of their recipes and try them at home instead.

In PE Sandymere have been busy practising for sports day which is after half term.  I was very impressed with their running skills.  We have some speedy children!

Mrs Snowdon shared on her head teacher’s blog the news of Oliver’s involvement in a car accident last week.  We have shared prayers for Oliver this week in class and the children have created a lovely get well soon card for him. We are very thankful that he is now out of hospital and recovering at home.

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

See you on Monday.
