20.4.16 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 21st Apr 2016 @ 1:52pm

Hello and welcome back!

We hope that you all had a wonderful Easter break and had a good rest.

And so it begins … the final term in Year 1! How time flies!

So far this week we have returned to our seahorses theme in Literacy and had great fun exploring what a seahorse might do in its day and even had a go at boxing up our ideas in anticipation of writing a seahorse diary.  We will begin those on Friday.

In Maths the children have been looking at bonds to 20, looking at clever ways of counting on, finding 10 more than a given number and also partitioning numbers into tens and ones! Phew! We are still finding bonds to 20 tricky so please so practise this further at home.

In phonics we have readjusted the groups slightly as all the children move forwards in their phonics phases.  We are going to be practising segmenting and blending every day and exploring alien words regularly. Thank you so much for the parents that helped their children to make their phonics games over the holidays as these are an essential part of the children’s phonics development.  The games help the children to reinforce their phonemes in fun and light hearted ways in addition to the daily teacher input.  The completed games now have pride of place in the challenge baskets and we look forward to the remaining games to make their way into school next week.

In Science the children enjoyed planting seeds and are looking forward to monitring their growth and in art the children are well on their way to creating handprint heroes - all will be revealed in due course!

In view of St George's day at the weekend; the children have been looking at the qualities of George and why he is so significant.

P.E will now take place on a Monday afternoon and Thursday morning, so please do make sure your child has their kit in school.  We had a wonderful session with Alex Waring this week exploring different games. The children really enjoyed themselves.
