28.9.17 Sandymere Learning Update
Date: 28th Sep 2017 @ 12:55pm
Firstly Mrs Worstencroft and I would like to thank you all for supporting your child in completing their homework. There are some lovely comments from parents with some very positive feedback. The next homework will be sent home tomorrow (Friday) to be returned on or before Tuesday next week.
Phonics – a few parents were a little unsure of the terminology of phonemes and graphemes. If you look on our class webpage you will see a few tabs under the picture. One of these tabs says phonics. Click on the tab and it will send you to a handy guide to understating phonics. Also you can always pop in and speak to either Mrs Worstencroft or I for a quick explanation.
This week we’ve been looking at graphemes ai, ou, ie, ea. The children have been exploring how they sound and where to find them within a word. We have also been using ‘robot arms’ to segment the words and count the phonemes. This week’s homework is all about counting phonemes within a word.
In English we began the week by listening to poems about the wind and collected wind words with our learning buddies. We then used these words to create our own poems and some of them are simply fabulous! With words such as swooping, diving and whooshing the children really made their poems cone alive with language. Well done children. Today the children are starting to look at Miranda the Great Explorer and follow her journey as she travels around the world in a hot air balloon. We will also be tracking her journey using the classroom world map.
We introduced the cursive letter c this week in handwriting and it has to be said that there were some impressive efforts. A SHOUT OUT to Izzy and Aiden for their beautiful letter formation. Ask your child to show how they are forming the letter or go to http://www.teachhandwriting.co.uk/continuous-cursive-letters-beginners.html to take a look at the cursive c. Your child can practise by drawing it in the sand, on chalk boards, whiteboards or even using a wet paint brush on the path outside.
In Geography this week we have looked at the four basic compass points. We were able to go outside onto the playground and explore compass directions using the playground compass too. We then created our own paper plate compasses and practised the rhyme Never Eat Slimy Worms to help us to remember NESW. There were some impressive individuals who also managed to follow compass direction on a map. A SHOUT OUT to Thomas for bringing in his own compass from home to share with the class.
In addition to this we have been tracking the weather all week and it is a delight to say that we've been able add sunny weather to our list!
In maths we have been using base 10 and investigating different ways of organising numbers to 10. We wanted the children to tell us why and how they’d organised their numbers – not always an easy job. Some fabulous explanation and reasoning skills this week. Top job!
Mrs Smith enjoyed using the apparatus in PE with the children. There were lots of confident balances and safe landings from jumps.
A quick note about water bottles - don't worry if your child doesn't bring a water bottle to school because the water fountain is right outside our classroom door and is accessible to the children all day.
Mrs Worstencroft has an action packed few days and is really looking forward to seeing the children’s wonderful writing.
See you all on Monday!
