6.6.19 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 6th Jun 2019 @ 4:31pm

Welcome back to the final half term in Year 1.  It's going to be an action packed half term with Phonics Screening Week next week, our trip to Delamere Forest on Tuesday 11th June, NAtional Sport's Week, Sport's Day and Enterprise Week to name but a few events!  Keep your eye on the school website, headteacher's blogs, events page to keep up to date with times and dates.

In preparation for next weeks phonics screening we have been busy with sound buttoning activities, name the alien and many interactive games too.  Thank you to those who completed the practise screening over the holidays as this will really help your child prepare for next week too.

In PSHCE this week we talked about where medicines are kept and how we shouldn’t ever take medicines without the doctors or parents’ permission.  Sandymere children made great links with how they need to follow these rules to stay safe.  They talked about how medicines should be stored in a high cupboard or locked away.  They then created a set of rules for being safe with medicine.

In English we have started to explore the story of Goldilocks and the three bears.  We had a lot of fun being super sleuths trying to work out which story we would be looking at by checking out the clues around the room.  There has been some excellent independent writing with children retelling the story in their own words and some absolutely fabulous character descriptions of Goldilocks.  The children in Year 1 are definitely rising to the challenge of becoming independent writers!

In maths we have begun to explore halves and quarters with great success.  We have really enjoyed working on the concept of equal amounts/segments and applying this to our problem solving activities too.

This week in Geography we have been exploring our local area using a bird’s eye view and aerial view maps.  The children have been looking at the school grounds and imagining what it might look like if they were a bird in the sky and then applying this to creating their own maps and plans of the classroom.  We then progressed to labelling aerial view maps of Winsford and we managed to locate and label our school, Tesco Express and the petrol station to name but a few places.  We have worked a lot on using positional and locational language – perhaps this is something you could try at home over the weekend?  What is behind, above, next to, left, right?  Some children are still mixing up their left and right so any extra practise would be fabulous!

Next week, when we are at Delamere Forest we will be able to develop our geography skills further by following simple maps and directions as well as extending our science knowledge and skills by identifying different types of trees and wild flowers. Let’s hope it isn’t too wet!

Sandymere class have been very busy practising for sport’s day.  They have now learnt the set up for the obstacle race and are showing great aptitude in balance and ball skills.  We hope you can make it!  Dates and times are on the school calendar.

Have a lovely weekend.
