6.9.18 Sandymere Learning Update
Date: 6th Sep 2018 @ 9:55am
Welcome to the first learning update of the school year.
Firstly I would like to say what a wonderful start to the school year we have had. The children have all settled in beautifully and quickly responded to the classroom routines. Well done children – you have shown confidence, independence and resilience. All excellent qualities.
Thank you for sending your child smartly dressed and well prepared with their PE kits and book bags too. Brownie points to the parents and carers!
We began the week by looking at the school’s Golden Rules and consequence systems and spent time exploring the rules ‘We are gentle’ and ‘We are kind and helpful’. We looked at a story called ‘Have you filled a bucket today?’ and discussed how we can fill our buckets with kind deeds and gestures throughout our day to day lives. Perhaps you would like to share this book with your child too? You can follow this link to watch it via YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EuemNAo6XE
In Maths we have been looking at sorting and grouping a range of different objects. We have come up with different categories for sorting the same set of objects. The children suggested we sort by colour, size, shape and, in the case of the animals, we sorted by the number of hands. The children used lots of wonderful reasoning and mathematical language.
Our topic for the autumn term is called ‘Did children have toys in the past?’ A copy of our topic web can be found on our class page on the school website. We began our topic by talking about favourite toys and sharing information books about toys. Your child’s homework (it’s in their large yellow homework book) is to bring to school a toy of their choice on Monday 10th September. Please note this toy will need to remain in school for the week so please do not send their bedtime favourites!
The children had their first PE lesson of the year with Mrs Pile on Wednesday and most of the children were fantastic at getting changed and keeping their clothes tidy. Well done Sandymere class! They enjoyed a wonderful session in the hall and followed instructions carefully.
This week we are reviewing your child’s phonic knowledge and focussing of Phase 3 phonemes. Next week your child will receive their first piece of phonics homework.
Reading books
We have collected in all the reading books your child read over the summer holidays and Mrs Worstencroft will sending new books home this week. All children will have their new reading books and records by Friday 7th September. We will be assessing children’s reading progress using the Benchmarking system in due course.
Water bottles
As your child is now in the main school building and they have easy access to the water fountain (which it right outside our classroom door) it isn’t necessary for your child to bring a water bottle to school. They can bring one if they wish to, however we would recommend that this is wrapped in a plastic carrier bag as water bottles are stored in your child’s book bag and we hope to avoid any leaking bottles and soggy reading books.
I think that’s all for this week. If you have any questions then please do pop in and speak to us or feel free to contact the school office for an appointment.
See you all on Monday.
