🌟 Celebrating Black History Month at School 🌟
This week, we’ve been learning all about Black History Month and celebrating the incredible achievements of Black individuals who have made a big difference in the world.
On Tuesday, we started with a special No Outsiders assembly where we learned about some truly inspirational people. We discovered how Barack Obama became the first Black President of the United States, how Mae Jemison was the first Black woman to travel into space and how Katherine Johnson helped send astronauts to the moon with her amazing maths skills. We also learned about Floella Benjamin, Martin Luther King Jr. and Mary Seacole, each of whom showed courage, kindness, and determination in their own unique ways.
We then focused on the life of Lewis Hamilton, the first Black Formula One driver. His story really inspired us! Lewis has overcome many challenges, including dyslexia, ADHD and racial abuse, to become one of the most successful racing drivers in history. His journey showed us that with perseverance and self-belief, we can achieve great things.
On Thursday, each class joined in with The Great Big Live Assembly (KS2) or The Picture News Live Assembly (KS1) during our Class Collective Worship time. This year’s theme was “Standing firm in our power and pride”, and we explored the powerful story of Rosa Parks. We learned how her bravery in standing up for what was right helped spark a huge change in society and inspired millions of people around the world.
Throughout the week, we’ve been reminded that everyone deserves respect and equality, and that we all have the power to make a difference. Black History Month has helped us celebrate the achievements of Black people past and present, and encouraged us to be proud of who we are.
As a school, we have spent a lot of time weaving Black History into our English curriculum. Throughout the year each class will spend time exploring the lives and legacies of significant Black figures such as Mae Jemison, Katherine Johnson and many more. These units are designed to celebrate achievements, spark curiosity and inspire our learners to dream big.
We’re excited to continue learning and celebrating the contributions of Black individuals to history, science, art, and beyond.
