Blakemere Weekly Blog - 11.10.2024
Date: 12th Oct 2024 @ 8:07pm
What a busy week we have all had this week but as normal our children have risen to the challenge and given their all to the tasks we have completed.
English
We have continued to use the text ‘The Watertower’ as a driver for our English lessons. We have focused on revising our understanding and knowledge of using speech punctuation to accurately punctuate direct speech. We then created a speech sandwich to show the speech between two of the characters within our text. Whilst writing this, the children also needed to think about how the speech could tell us something about the character and how it could move the action forward. Towards the end of the week, we explored writing in the passive voice and how we can change our sentences around to reflect this.
Maths
In Maths, we completed our unit assessment on number and place value, and I was very impressed to see how hard the children worked and how much knowledge they had retained for our topic. We have now moved on to our next unit of work which is all about the four operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We have reminded ourselves of the formal method of addition and subtraction and how to solve missing number problems with these. Next week, we shall move on to word problems.
History
We have spent last two weeks in History, exploring the different classes aboard the Titanic and what life would have been like for them on the ship. This week, we took all the information that we collected about a particular class and put it into a fact file. The children presented their work in such a beautiful way. It was so impressive to see.
RE
We are continuing to explore the non-religious world view of Humanism and during today’s lesson we explore their idea about how we only have one life so we should live it to the fullest. The children were tasked today with writing a recipe for a happy life.
Play Leaders
Each year, the children in Blakemere take on the role of Play Leaders. This is where during lunch times they organise and deliver activities for the children in Key Stage 1. This week we had our first training session with Mr Connerley from the Winsford Academy where we discussed the attributes needed to make a good leader. We also explored and played may different games that we could lead with the children. We have our final session next week.
Well done
A huge well done this week to Mia for winning the raffle ticket prize and to Alex, Ava D, Natalie, Roey, Franklin and Quinn for having their work selected for Excellent Examples. They will bring this work home with them next Friday to share with you. Finally, a huge well done to Holly and Joshua for being selected as Worker of the Week in Blakemere by their peers.
Secret Question
Share our class blog with your child and send them in with the answer to this secret question to earn themselves some raffle tickets:
Name the four operations in Maths
What can you do at home?
- Ensure your child has prepared themselves for the week ahead by having their reading book in school with them every day.
- Thank you for your support in using our new online reading journal. You will be receiving a new link on Monday to start recording your reading for next week so keep a look out for it in your inbox.
- Children now have their Times Table Rockstars login so please can I ask you to encourage your child to access it on a regular basis and at least 4 times per week. We will celebrate Times Table Rockstars every Friday.
- Spellings are given out on a Monday and then that rule will be explored for the following two weeks in school. The children will take part in a spelling check and the date for this will be noted on top of their spellings. I will attach the file to our weekly blog, but can I ask you to encourage your child to learn and practise these words. There will be suggested activities on the sheet. Our next spelling check will be Monday 21st October. Please let me know of you need another copy of these.
- PE will be on a Monday and Thursday so please ensure that you have the correct PE kit in school on these days. Footwear is required on both days.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and if you have any questions then please do ask.
