🌟 Blakemere Class Weekly Blog 🌟

What a thoughtful and engaging week we have had in Blakemere! Across the curriculum, the children have shone their light through curiosity, reflection and respect for the world around them.

In English, we explored a powerful advertisement raising awareness about the poaching of tigers for tiger bone wine. This learning provided a meaningful opportunity for spiritual development, as the children were encouraged to “look through the window” at both the ‘wows’ and ‘ows’ of our world. They reflected deeply on the choices people make and considered their own views and values. It was wonderful to hear such compassionate and thoughtful responses, with many children expressing a sense of responsibility to care for creation and stand up for what is right—truly letting their light shine before others.

We then moved on to developing our note-taking skills, using videos about tigers. The children carefully gathered key words and phrases, which they will use next week to create their own list poems. Their enthusiasm and focus showed great perseverance and independence.

In Maths, we have continued exploring 3D shapes and their properties. It has been fantastic to see the children beginning to reason more deeply, explaining why shapes are constructed in certain ways. This reflects their growing ability to think critically and make connections—important aspects of their wider development.

Our DT learning has continued with our food unit, building towards our final outcome of making savoury muffins. This week, we explored where food comes from—whether it is grown, reared or caught—and discussed how and why food is processed. The children showed great curiosity and awareness about the journey of food, making links to sustainability and making thoughtful choices.

In Science, we have been learning about evolution and inheritance. Using the familiar and fun characters from Mr Men and Little Miss, the children explored inherited characteristics and how we are all uniquely made. This supported their understanding of identity and individuality—encouraging them to value themselves and others.

We also spent time exploring our British Value of Democracy. The children discussed what democracy is, why it is important and how voting and government work. They created word art using key vocabulary and had some fantastic discussions about fairness, equality and having a voice. It was inspiring to hear them recognise the importance of speaking up respectfully—another way in which they can let their light shine in the wider community.

Our Year 6 celebration preparation is well underway. The children are working hard learning their lines and the songs. Plesae could ask that you support them in this. Our celebration night is Wednesday 15th July at 3:45pm. More information to follow.
