Computing and Online Safety

Computing Intent

At Over St John’s CE Primary School, our Computing curriculum is shaped explicitly by our theologically rooted Christian vision: "Let your light shine before others" (Matthew 5:16). We believe that every child is created by God with unique worth, dignity and potential, and our purpose in Computing is to nurture that God-given light so that pupils grow in confidence, develop wisdom and are prepared to flourish in an ever-changing digital world.

Rooted in our vision to put children first and grounded in faith, respect and aspiration, our Computing curriculum equips pupils with the knowledge, skills and character needed to use technology creatively, safely and responsibly. We are committed to ensuring that every child, including those who are disadvantaged and those with SEND, has equitable access to high-quality digital learning so they can aspire, achieve and shine.

We aim to empower pupils to become confident, competent and creative digital learners who can use technology for good, make informed choices and contribute positively to the world around them. Through carefully sequenced learning in computer science, information technology, digital literacy and online safety, pupils develop resilience, curiosity, independence and problem-solving skills. These qualities enable them to recognise their own potential, understand their responsibilities and appreciate the difference they can make in the lives of others.

Following our curriculum rationale, Computing at Over St John’s is designed to inspire, foster curiosity and encourage pupils to ask questions, think critically and develop a sense of responsibility within an increasingly digital society. Our progressive curriculum ensures that pupils know more, remember more and can do more over time. By revisiting and building upon prior learning, children develop secure knowledge and understanding that enables them to use technology confidently, ethically and effectively. This reflects our Christian vision, which encourages pupils to use their gifts wisely and to shine brightly through their actions, choices and contributions.

Online safety is a central and integral part of our Computing curriculum and reflects our commitment to safeguarding, wellbeing and the dignity of every child. We teach pupils how to stay safe online, protect themselves and others, and act with integrity in all digital environments. Through a carefully planned progression of learning, children develop an understanding of how to build positive online relationships, manage their digital footprint, protect personal information and maintain their privacy and security.

We equip pupils with the knowledge and skills to recognise and respond appropriately to online risks, including cyberbullying, scams, misinformation, harmful content and unsafe online behaviours. As technology continues to evolve, pupils are taught to think critically about the information they encounter online, understand how digital content can influence beliefs and choices, and become discerning users of technology. Our curriculum promotes media literacy, digital resilience and responsible digital citizenship, helping pupils to make informed decisions that reflect wisdom, justice, compassion and respect for others.

Across the school, the Computing curriculum is adapted thoughtfully to ensure that every child can succeed. Scaffolded activities, deliberate practice, adaptive teaching strategies and explicit vocabulary instruction enable all learners to access and achieve within the curriculum. Knowledge organisers, retrieval practice and evidence-informed teaching approaches support pupils in building secure long-term knowledge and confidence, preparing them for future learning and participation in an increasingly digital society.

Our Computing curriculum helps children discover their God given potential, grow in the love of God and develop the digital knowledge, skills and understanding needed to navigate the modern world safely and successfully. We want every pupil to leave Over St John’s as a responsible digital citizen who can use technology creatively, ethically and confidently, shining brightly online and in the wider world, both now and in their future lives.

Within our school, Reception and Key Stage One children are taught in single-age classes, whilst Key Stage Two children are taught across three mixed-age classes. Our Computing curriculum has been carefully designed to ensure progression, consistency and high expectations for all pupils within this structure.
