Blakemere Weekly Blog - 26.04.2024

Date: 28th Apr 2024 @ 10:21am

What a super week we have had in Blakemere. The children have achieved so much and it has been great to see.

English

We have continued to explore the text King Kong and this has inspired our writing this week. We have written from the point of view of Ann from the moment that she was captured and taken to the island by the tribesman. This piece of writing enabled the children to successfully use the passive voice to show that Ann was helpless to the things that were happening to her. We have also written from the point of view of the two tribesman about their thoughts on the ritual. The children were encouraged to use dialogue here to move the action forward. The writing the children have produced this week has been excellent.

Maths

We have been exploring angles this week in Maths. We have explored different angles and talked about their properties, we have compared and ordered them and then explored how to measure them accurately using a protractor. This is quite a challenging skill and the children have worked well towards achieving it.

Science

In Science, we carried out an investigation we explored whether materials were soluble or not.The children had to mix different materials into warm water to see if they dissolved. Lots of discussion took place about which materaisl would or wouldn't dissolve. Why not ask you child what soluble means and see if they are able to tell you?

Art

Our focus in art, is using mixed media to create a landscape image. This week we have been experiementing with different medias in art to recreate landscape and cityscape images. The purpose of this is to enable the children to decided which mixed media they will use for their final piece of work. The children had the opportunity to explore using pastels and charcoal, wax resist and water colours nad water colours and handwriting pen.

History

We are continuing to explore the salt industry in Nantwich and this week we looked at different reasons for why the salt industry declined and placed them on to a continum in order of significance. The children also put forward valid reasons as to why they thought what they did.

Secret Question

Share our class blog with your child and send them in with the answer to this secret question to earn themselves some raffle tickets:

Which angle is less than 90 degrees?

What can you do at home?

  • Ensure your child has prepared themselves for the week ahead by having their reading book and diary in school with them every day and having the correct PE kit in school. Monday and Tuesday for Year 5 children and Tuesday for Year 6.
  • Year 6 children need their swimming kit and goggles every Monday.
  • Reading diaries are checked every Tuesday so it is imperative they are in school.
  • Read with your child and encourage them to find books and reading materials that they are interested in. I am also always happy to help and recommend books if needed.
  • Encourage your child to practise their times tables on Times Table Rockstar. Times tables are incredibly important in all areas of Maths and a fast and confident recall of them really helps. Numbers of children accessing this excellent resource has fallen over the past few weeks so I will be looking for numbers now increasing. Passwords can be found in your child's reading diary.
  • Practise the list of spellings that are sent home.
  • You may want to encourage your child to take a look in the SATS Practise and Revision section of Blakemere's class page. This is for Year 6 children only. If you do complete any of the tasks, please do show me what you have completed and achieved.
  •

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and if you have any questions then please do ask.
