Blakemere's Weekly Blog -01.03.2024
Date: 3rd Mar 2024 @ 9:42am
Welcome back after the half term. The children have worked hard in Blakemere this week in all areas and have welcomed Miss Ormandy (our student teacher) who will be with us for four weeks and taking on some of th teahing within our class.
English
This week saw the children complete their hybrid report about their chosen animal. Within their report, the children needed to inform, explain and persuade the readers. They need to share information about their animal's habitat, diet and appearance, explain the reasons why their animal is endangered and persuade them to act to do something about protecting the animal. The children worked incredibly hard to produce their report and to include all of the mastery keys that we have been learning. I am very much looking forward to reading these reports.
Maths
We have continued to explore decimals within Maths this week where the children have been mulitplying and dividing decimals and them finding decimal remainders. Towards the end of the week, the children began to finding fraction and decimal equivalents for 1/2 1/4 1/5 and 1/10. This was quite tricky and is something that we shall continue to explore next week.
Science
In Science, we have started our new unit on the properties of materials. The children began by exploring lots of the vocabulary that we shall be introduced to over the coming weeks and idenifying what these words mean. They were then asked to sort a variety of materials into groups of their choosing and to then explain why they had sorted them that way. It was great to hear the children's justifications and ideas.
History - How has the salt industry changed over time?
We have also started our new history unit which focuses on our local history. During this topic, we shall be exploring the salt industry both here in Winsford and in Nantwich and discussing how they have changed. We shall be using lots of different sources of information to help us learn about these area.
World Book Day - 07.03.2024
On Thursday 7th March, we shall be celebrating World Book Day at school. This year, we are asking children to dress up in their own clothes to represent who they are.The theme this year is about being unique, being diverse, being you! We are going to focus on the poem 'People will always need people' by Benjamin Zephaniah and we shall be leanring part of it to recite along with the rest of the school. We will also be explring the book Malala's magic pencil within class.
What can you do at home?
- Ensure your child has prepared themselves for the week ahead by having their reading book and diary in school with them every day and having the correct PE kit in school every Tuesday and Thursday.
- Reading diaries are checked every Monday so it is imperative they are in school.
- Read with your child and encourage them to find books and reading materials that they are interested in. I am also always happy to help and recommend books if needed.
- Encourage your child to practise their times tables on Times Table Rockstar. Times tables are incredibly important in all areas of Maths and a fast and confident recall of them really helps. Numbers of children accessing this excellent resource has fallen over the past few weeks so I will be looking for numbers now increasing. Passwords can be found
- Practise the list of spellings that are sent home.
- You may want to encourage your child to take a look in the SATS Practise and Revision section of Blakemere's class page. This is for Year 6 children only. If you do complete any of the tasks, please do show me what you have completed and achieved.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and if you have any questions then please do ask.
