Blakemere's Weekly Blog - 06.12.24
Date: 8th Dec 2024 @ 9:46am
What a great week in Blakemere, we have had! We have achieved quite a lot and the children should all be very proud of themselves.
English
This week, we have started our new text in English ‘Of Thee I Sing’ by Barack Obama. It is a book about inspirational people throughout history who have all taken a stand and gone on to achieve great things. We will be using this text, alongside ‘Young Gifted and Black’ to find about more about the different people and using these people as inspirations for our writing. During this week, we have made predictions and inferences about our text, explored some of the vocabulary from within our text and recapped on creating complex sentences using subordinate clauses.
Maths
This week in Maths we have started our unit on fractions. We have explored what a fraction is, how to find equivalent fractions and looked for patterns with this and then moved on to simplifying fractions using division. A super start made to this unit in Maths.
DT
As we get ever closer to making our own moving cam toy, we carried out some market research this week as to what would be the best image to have on top of our toys. The children had to pick four different images. They then visited the different classes throughout school to find out the views of the children.
Geography
We have started our Geography unit which is focusing on the UK, the physical and human characteristics, energy sources and sustainability. We began this week by exploring how the UK is made up: the countries and capital cities and the surrounding seas and oceans. We explored the differing names for the UK and what these include.
Well done
A huge well done this week to Joshua for winning the raffle ticket prize and to Roey, Frankie and Mia for having their work selected for Excellent Examples. They will bring this work home with them next Friday to share with you. This week, we had another two children receive their bronze reading badges: Ava D and Haley. As I wasn’t in class last lesson on Friday, we did not carry out our worker of the week vote so we shall do this on Monday.
Secret Question
Share our class blog with your child and send them in with the answer to this secret question to earn themselves some raffle tickets:
Find an equivalent to ¾.
What can you do at home?
• Ensure your child has prepared themselves for the week ahead by having their reading book in school with them every day.
• PE is on a Monday and Thursday so please ensure that your child has the correct PE kit in on those days. Appropriate footwear is also encouraged. We will continue to be outside for PE on Monday’s along as it is not raining so it is incredibly important that the children have jogging bottoms to wear.
• Read with your child and encourage them to find books and reading materials that they are interested in. I am also always happy to help and recommend books if needed. Please record this reading each day on the online reading log. A new link is sent to you from Learning with Parents each week. I absolutely love reading the comments, seeing the photographs and hearing the audio clips of the children reading.
• Encourage your child to practise their times tables on Times Table Rockstar. Times tables are incredibly important in all areas of Maths and a fast and confident recall of them really helps.
• Practise the list of spellings that are sent home. We will be continuing with the words sent out last week and will have the spelling check for these on Monday 15th December. Please let me know of you need another copy of these.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and if you have any questions then please do ask.
