Happy New Year from Blakemere!
Welcome back, everyone! I hope you had a wonderful festive break and are ready for an exciting year ahead. It’s been fantastic to see how well the children have settled back into school life—full of enthusiasm, and a readiness to learn.
In English, we’ve continued exploring A Place for Me, our Windrush-themed text, which has been the driver for our work. This week, we focused on modal verbs and adverbs of possibility, created eye-catching recruitment posters encouraging people from the Caribbean to come and work in the UK, and planned a diary entry in role as a child arriving on the Empire Windrush. The creativity and empathy shown in these tasks have been brilliant!
In Maths, we’ve been diving deeper into fractions—finding common denominators to help us order, add, and subtract fractions, and even tackling some tricky problem-solving challenges. The resilience shown during these sessions has been impressive.
In Science, we explored switches and electrical circuits. The children built circuits using a light, battery, wires, and a switch, then went a step further by making their own switches using paperclips and split pins. We discovered that metal is a great conductor of electricity—a real hands-on learning experience!
In PSHCE, Year 6 completed their Online Safety unit, while Year 5 began their First Aid unit, learning essential skills that could make a big difference in real-life situations.
A huge well done to:
- Jaydan for being selected from the Golden Tin.
- Evie, Courban, Jaydan, Sophia, and Kobe for having their work chosen as excellent examples.
- Zac, Kobe, and Evie for being voted Workers of the Week by their peers.
- Danielle, Alyssia, and Brooke for shining as Times Table Rockstars.
Gentle Reminders
- Reading should be happening at least 4 times a week—there’s no excuse! If you need help choosing books, I’m happy to assist.
- Reading books need to be in school every day.
- Times Table Rockstars—little and often is the key to success!
- Weekly spellings should be practiced regularly.
- PE is on Tuesday and Friday—please ensure kits are in school.
Thank you for your continued support. Have a fantastic weekend!
