Blakemere's Weekly Blog -12.01.2024

Date: 14th Jan 2024 @ 9:26am

We are all back in the swing of things now in Blakemere after our Christmas break and have worked hard this week in a variety of different areas.

English

We have contined to explore the theme of endangered animals and species through using the book 'Can we save the tiger?' by Martin Jenkins. On Monday, we watched a powerful advert exploring how tigers are being sadly hunted for their bones to make tiger bone wine. The children explored and discussed their thoughts and understanding about the advert and how it made them feel. We have then moved on to explore creating complex sentences using subordinate conjunctions and clause and towards the end of the week the children produced a list poem about tigers using effective vocabulary that they had collected.

Maths

We are continuing to look at and explore all things fractions in Maths. We have been looking at how to find a  common denominator to help order and compare fractions. We then revisited some learning from before Christmas to ensure that is was 'sticky.' We shall continue using the method of finding a common denominator next weeks as we move on to adding and subtracting fractions and solving word problems involving them.

Design and Technology

This week, in preparation for the children making their own fairgorund ride using a pulley and electrical system, they researched and then made their own pulley following a step-by-step video. the children were thrilled when their pulley managed to rotate and lift a bucket up and down.

PSHE

We have been exploring peer pressure this week in PSHE. The children have explored what peer pressure is and how it doesn't always have to be a negative form of pressure. We have also explored different excusres or reasons children could use to help them remove themsleves from a situation that was making them feel uncomfortable. We shall move on to looking at the risk associated within different situations.

What can you do at home?

  • Read with your child and encourage them to find books that they are interested in.
  • Encourage your child to practise their times tables on Times Table Rockstar. Times tables are incredibly important in all areas of Maths and a fast and confident recall ot them really helps.
  • Practise the list of spellings that are sent home.
  • You may want to encourage your child to take a look in the SATS Practise and Revision section of Blakemere's class page. This is for Year 6 children only.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
