Blakemere's Weekly Blog - 13.01.2023

Date: 15th Jan 2023 @ 8:36am

Another busy and successful week in Blakemere. The children are impressing me so much with their drive and determination towards all areas of their learning.

In Maths, we have continued our topic on fractions. This week we have been ordering fractions and adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators. The children have developed their confidence in finding a common denominator to help them carry out this work. They also moved on to using this method to help them to solve a variety of worded problems. We shall continue our topic on fractions into next week.

In English, the children were introdcued to our new book 'Of Thee I Sing' by Barack Obama following the predictions and inferences that they had made. The children firstly shared their likes about the book. We have also had some great discussins this week about inequality and race and how throughout history people have been treated differently because of their skin colour or gender, The children had some very mature thoughts and responses. Towards the end of the week, we explore the life of Jean-Michel Baquait. The children were tasked to write a parargraph about his life using complex sentences.

We have started our new topic in art, in which we will be focusing on printing and exploring different printing techniques. We began by exploring the life and work of Andy Warhol who used Silk Screen printing in his work. This is one of the tecniques which we are going to explore. We also found out that he collaborated with Jean-Michel Basquait. For our art work, we will be using the salt crystal statues in Town Park as inspiration.

We also started our new history topic this week. Our enquiry question for this half term is 'How has the salt industry changed over time?' We firslty explored what Winsford is famous for and then acted like historians and explored a variety of different images linked to the salt industry in Winsford both past and present. The children had to explain waht they thought was happening in each image.

I am very much looking forward to next week.
