Blakemere's Weekly Blog - 13/02/2026

Date: 13th Feb 2026 @ 3:44pm

What a fast half-term this has been! Even though the week has been a little on the chatty side, we’ve still achieved so much, and the children should feel proud of their hard work and enthusiasm across all subjects.

📘 English

We started our new poetry unit inspired by The Blitz by Mary-Desirée Anderson.
This week, we have:

  • Read and discussed the poem
  • Explored challenging vocabulary
  • Looked closely at noun phrases and personification
  • Studied a second poem, When the Night Shook
  • Created our own blackout poetry to investigate powerful and effective vocabulary

The children have shown great imagination and sensitivity when exploring these themes.

➗ Maths

In Maths, we have been investigating the power of number! We have:

  • Multiplied and divided whole and decimal numbers by 10, 100 and 1,000
  • Explored the relationships between decimals and fractions, focusing on halves, quarters and fifths

The class has shown real determination—well done!

🌍 Geography

We completed our fieldwork write‑ups this week, building on the practical investigations we did previously. The children worked carefully to present their findings clearly and accurately.

🔬 Science

We began our new topic on the Properties of Materials.
This week we explored:

  • Different material properties
  • What these scientific words mean
  • How these ideas will help us describe materials in detail later in the unit

A great start to our new topic!

💬 PSHCE

As part of Children’s Mental Health Week, we explored the theme “This is My Place.”
The children created beautiful personal maps using images, symbols and words that represent who they are. It linked wonderfully with our typography unit from before Christmas.

🎨 Art

Our new art unit is all about mixed media landscapes and cityscapes.
Today, we experimented with ways to extend and develop our sketchbooks, ready for creating more detailed artwork after half-term. Creativity was flowing!

🎉 Let’s Celebrate!

A huge well done to the following children:

  • Lexi‑May – for having her name pulled from the tin!
  • Lexi‑May, Connie and Evie – Workers of the Week
  • Danielle, Keiya and Brooke – Times Tables Rockstars
  • Marley, Lexi‑May, Poppy, Alice, Connie and Evie – Excellent work chosen for display and celebration

Fantastic achievements—keep it up!

🔔 Reminders

To help your child continue to make great progress, please support them with the following:

📚 Reading at Home

Reading has dipped recently.
Please ensure your child reads at least four times a week.
If you need book suggestions, I’m always happy to help.
Reading books should be in school every day.

🎸 Times Table Rockstars

A few minutes of regular practice can make a huge difference!

✏️ Weekly Spellings

Please encourage your child to practise throughout the week.

👟 PE Days

PE is on Tuesday and Friday.
Please ensure PE kits are in school.

It was also lovely seeing so many of you at our pupil consultation evenings this week.
Have a wonderful half-term break, and I look forward to seeing everyone again on Monday 23rd February.
