Blakemere's Weekly Blog - 14.03.2025
Date: 16th Mar 2025 @ 9:52am
Another busy week, this week, in Blakemere.
English
We are continuing to read the book, The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde in English and using this as a driver for our work. This week, we have explored the Giant and what type of person he is and then produced a character description about him with the aim of including some of our mastery keys (the writing skills we are trying to master). We recapped on active and passive sentences in our writing and how we can switch between the two and then finally wrote a monologue as if we were the Giant talking about our thoughts and feelings.
Maths
We have continued to explore percentages this week in Maths and used everything that we had learn over the past couple of weeks to help us to find any percentage of amounts.
Science
We have been exploring light in Science. We have identified that light travels in a straight line from a light source. If the light is blocked, we know that a shadow is created. We also looked at what happens to our eyes (pupils) when the light changes. We went from a dark classroom to the playground and noticed the size of our pupils change.
History
In History, we have started to look at our local history unit all about the salt industry here in Winsford. We began by exploring the salt factories, which produced salt, from large, heated pans of brine water. We explored how this industry in Winsford was popular but by 1962 all the factories had closed. We have been using lots of books about Winsford which include some amazing historical photographs of the time. These are our primary sources of information. The children this week, produced a PowerPoint about the salt factories salt production.
Well done
A huge well done this week to Arabella for winning the raffle ticket prize and to Ava K, Kai, Arabella and Tate for having their work selected for Excellent Examples. They will bring this work home with them next Friday to share with you. Well done to Joshua and Natalie for being Blakemere’s first silver reading badge earners. We also have some other children very close to either their bronze or silver reading badges over the next couple of weeks so keep reading. Another well done to Kai for being selected as Blakemere’s Worker of the Week by his peers.
Year 6 SATS
On our class webpage, there is lots of information regarding the Year 6 SATS week, which begins Monday 12th May to Thursday 15th May 2025. More information about these will be sent out closer to the time along with information about our Year 6 breakfast club that week.
Secret Question
Share our class blog with your child and send them in with the answer to this secret question to earn themselves some raffle tickets:
Why were the salt factories built along the River Weaver?
What can you do at home?
• Ensure your child has prepared themselves for the week ahead by having their reading book in school with them every day.
• PE is on a Monday and Thursday so please ensure that your child has the correct PE kit in on those days. Appropriate footwear is also encouraged. We will continue to be outside for PE on Monday’s along as it is not raining so it is incredibly important that the children have jogging bottoms to wear.
• Read with your child and encourage them to find books and reading materials that they are interested in. I am also always happy to help and recommend books if needed. Please record this reading each day on the online reading log. A new link is sent to you from Learning with Parents each week. I absolutely love reading the comments, seeing the photographs and hearing the audio clips of the children reading.
• Encourage your child to practise their times tables on Times Table Rockstar. Times tables are incredibly important in all areas of Maths and a fast and confident recall of them really helps.
• Practise the list of spellings that are sent home. Please let me know of you need another copy of these.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and if you have any questions then please do ask.
