Blakemere's Weekly Blog - 19.01.2024

Date: 21st Jan 2024 @ 9:25am

I can't quite believe we are again at the end of another week here in Blakemere. It has great to see the children working hard in a variety of different areas of their learning.

Maths

We have continued with exploring fractions this week focusing on adding and subtracting those with different denominators. We then used this knowledge to solve problems involoving adding and subtracting fractions and then later moving on to adding and subtrating mixed number fractions. There were times this week when some elements of the learning were quite tricky but the children preservered and were determined to achieve. Huge well done Blakemere!

English

We have continued to the use the text 'Can we save the tiger?' as a driver for our learning this week. We have spent our lessons exploring and practising how to use and create relative clauses to add extra information to our sentences (main clauses) and then moved on to using brackets to add parenthesis to our sentences. Next week, we shall use this learning witin our writing.

Design Technology

In DT this week, the children carried out market research througout school to find out the views of our children about which fairground ride they would like to see designed. This research was to inform the planning and designing stages of the children's work.

Science

In Science, the children explored materials that are conductors and insulators of electricity. They had to build a simple circuit to light a bulb and then add in different materials. If the bulb lit, then the material added was a conductor but if it did not then the material was an insulator.

Computing

The children began to design their websites today about endangered animals. THey used the layout options from Google slides as a basis. Next week, the children will start to build their website.

What can you do at home?

  • Read with your child and encourage them to find books that they are interested in.
  • Encourage your child to practise their times tables on Times Table Rockstar. Times tables are incredibly important in all areas of Maths and a fast and confident recall ot them really helps.
  • Practise the list of spellings that are sent home.
  • You may want to encourage your child to take a look in the SATS Practise and Revision section of Blakemere's class page. This is for Year 6 children only. If you di complete any of the tasks, please do show me what you are achevied.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
