Blakemere's Weekly Blog - 22.03.2024

Date: 24th Mar 2024 @ 1:58pm

Another week completed here in Blakemere and Miss Ormandy’s last week with us as she returns to St. Joseph’s to continue her placement.

English

We have continued to explore the text, King Kong, by Anthony Browne and have focused on two of the main characters – Carl Denham and Ann Darrow. The children completed a role on the wall for each character where they identified and inferred characteristics and behaviours of each character using evidence from the text. As the week progressed, the children planned and wrote a diary from the point of view of Carl Denham.

Maths

Finding different percentages of amounts has been the focus for this week. We have explored finding 10% and multiples of 10% and 1% and multiples of 1%. We have also looked at how we can combine these to find more complex percentages such as 43% or 55%. It was lovely to hear some of the discussions that were taking place regarding different ways of finding these percentages.

Science

We carried out our activity for British Science Week, this week. Our activity was called ‘Get Set Jellies.’ We were exploring whether adding different fruit to jellies would affect the setting time of the jelly. The children carried out the investigation and then completed a full investigation using the eight steps to an investigation. They discussed and identified variables and how they would make the investigation fair. We were all surprised with the results as the fruit did affect the setting time of the jelly.

Art

In Art, we explored using water colours and how we can use these water colours to create different effects and textures. We experimented with different techniques of using water colours – wet on wet, wet on dry, creating gradients to name but a few. We shall be experimenting with a variety of different medias before choosing the ones they want to use to create their landscape scene.

KIVA: Anti-Bulling Workshop

On Friday afternoon, we completed are second anti- bullying session. During this session, we explored a made-up bullying situation and the different roles that people may take in this. We explored and discussed the role of the ‘silent observers.’ Those people who do not actively take part in the bullying, but they also do nothing to stop it. We discussed the impact that these people may have on the bullied person. I was extremely impressed with the children’s mature attitude and responses to the questions.

Secret Question

Share our class blog with your child and send them in with the answer to this secret question to earn themselves some raffle tickets:

What is 6³?

What can you do at home?

  • Ensure your child has prepared themselves for the week ahead by having their reading book and diary in school with them every day and having the correct PE kit in school every Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Reading diaries are checked every Monday so it is imperative they are in school.
  • Read with your child and encourage them to find books and reading materials that they are interested in. I am also always happy to help and recommend books if needed.
  • Encourage your child to practise their times tables on Times Table Rockstar. Times tables are incredibly important in all areas of Maths and a fast and confident recall of them really helps. Numbers of children accessing this excellent resource has fallen over the past few weeks so I will be looking for numbers now increasing. Passwords can be found in your child's reading diary.
  • Practise the list of spellings that are sent home.
  • You may want to encourage your child to take a look in the SATS Practise and Revision section of Blakemere's class page. This is for Year 6 children only. If you do complete any of the tasks, please do show me what you have completed and achieved.
  •

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and if you have any questions then please do ask.
