Blakemere's Weekly Blog - 22.11.2024
Date: 23rd Nov 2024 @ 12:14pm
I think it is fair to say that Blakemere have had a successful week in all areas of their learning.
English
We have continued with our poetry unit about the sea. We have explored lots of different vocabulary that we could use within our poems and found the meaning of them. We then explored lots of different images of the sea and used these to create a vocabulary bank of words, noun phrases, personification, similes and metaphors that could be used to describe the image. We then went on to explore a very famous poem called The Convergence of the Twain by Thomas Hardy. This poem was written in the aftermath of the sinking of the Titanic. The children worked hard on understanding the poem and then performing part of it in groups before exploring in detail what one of the stanzas meant.
Maths
This week in Maths has been all about division. The Year 6 children have worked incredibly hard this week exploring, practising and mastering the long division method and it has been great to see their confidence grow over the week, even if there was some frustration at times. The Year 5 children have also spent time mastering the short method of division and the long method of multiplication.
History
We are coming to the end of our history unit now and we spent this week looking at who we felt was at fault for so many people losing their lives aboard the Titanic. The children were presented with different information about this and they had to explain their reason using the evidence to justify their thoughts.
DT
This week we have explore different cam shapes and their names. We will use this information next week to help us to test out different cams to explore the movements that they make.
Well done
A huge well done this week to Arabella for winning the raffle ticket prize and to Harry, Mia, Holly, Finley and Eva C for having their work selected for Excellent Examples. They will bring this work home with them next Friday to share with you. Finally, a huge well done to Eva E for being selected as Worker of the Week in Blakemere by their peers.
Secret Question
Share our class blog with your child and send them in with the answer to this secret question to earn themselves some raffle tickets:
What is Mrs M’s favourite animal?
What can you do at home?
• Ensure your child has prepared themselves for the week ahead by having their reading book in school with them every day.
• PE is on a Monday and Thursday so please ensure that your child has the correct PE kit in on those days. Appropriate footwear is also encouraged. We will continue to be outside for PE on Monday’s along as it is not raining so it is incredibly important that the children have jogging bottoms to wear.
• Read with your child and encourage them to find books and reading materials that they are interested in. I am also always happy to help and recommend books if needed. Please record this reading each day on the online reading log. A new link is sent to you from Learning with Parents each week. I absolutely love reading the comments, seeing the photographs and hearing the audio clips of the children reading.
• Encourage your child to practise their times tables on Times Table Rockstar. Times tables are incredibly important in all areas of Maths and a fast and confident recall of them really helps.
• Practise the list of spellings that are sent home. We will be continuing with the words sent out last week and will have the spelling check for these on Monday 2nd December. Please let me know of you need another copy of these.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and if you have any questions then please do ask.
