What a great week we have had in Blakemere! We have achieved so many things this week!

Lion Salt Works Visit

On Thursday, we visited the Lion Salt Works in Northwich to build on what we had been learning in our local history topic about the salt industries in Winsford. It was lovely to be able to see what we had been learning in action. We were able to see the different elements of the salt panning industry and how the salt was made. We were surprised with how large the pans actually were. We found more out about the trade and transport links and where salt was shipped too. We made our own salt crystals through filtration and dissolving and then applying heat to create evaporation. We also produced art work using salt. It was such a fantastic day and everyone enjoyed themselves.

English

We have continued to explore our book the Selfish Giant. We have spent some time this week creating expanded noun phrases and then extending them through the use of a relative clause. We then used thiese descriptions of the giant's garden to create a poem. The vocabulary that has been used this week was within the children's writing was beautiful and very fitting to the formality of the text.

Maths

Maths has been about all things measure this week. We have explored a variety of different units of measure, read scales involving capacity, mass and length, converted between the different units of measure and then solved problems. We have had to work hard to keep remembering the different values: 1000g in 1kg,  1000ml in 1L, 10mm in 1cm, 100cm in 1m and 1000m in 1km.

Art

We finally produced our slik screen prints this week. These were very intricate designs and the children worked extremely hard to create firstly draw their designs on to printing fabric, then to apply a glue barrier as to where they didnt want the ink to go before carrying out their printing. The children then evaluated their piece of art work and made suggestions for improvements and identified what went well.

Finally, on Friday afternoon, the children took part in their sponsored event for St. Luke's Hospice. It was lovely to see the children working hard to complete circuits around the equipment in a certain amount of time. We have also been workingn extremely hard on our song for the Easter Service as well as the Year 6 children preparing and learning the script.

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and I shall see you tomorrow.
