Blakemere's Weekly Blog - 27.09.2024
Date: 29th Sep 2024 @ 10:33am
Team Blakemere have worked extremely hard this week, once again, and have achieved lots of great things.
English
We have continued with our text, The Watertower by Gary Crew this week. We initially explored and discussed the thoughts and feelings of one of the main characters, Bubba, when he ventured into to the tower. We then moved on to planning and writing a diary entry in role as Bubba recounting all the events from the day he went to the tower. Within our writing, we are working hard to include the mastery keys we have been learning – the key skills we want to have in our writing.
Maths
In Maths, this week, we have explored estimating numbers on to a number line up to 1,000,000 and 10,000,000. We identified the mid-point, the number of intervals and what this could tell about what the number line was jumping up in. We then moved on to exploring negative numbers and counting backwards and forwards through 0.
RE
We are focusing on the non-religious world view of Humanism and exploring the beliefs and values that all Humanists hold. This week, we explored one of the five features of being a Humanist which focuses on human nature and potential. We explored the meaning to the following story and the children could clearly explain what they thought this story meant:
An old woman said to her grandson: ‘I have two wolves inside me. One wolf is bad – greedy, angry, jealous, cruel, untrustworthy, arrogant, and cowardly. The other wolf is good – loving, brave, honest, kind, peaceful, modest, and happy. These two wolves are fighting inside me every day. But these two wolves are not just inside me. They are also in you. They are fighting inside everybody.’
After a moment, the boy asked: ‘Which wolf will win?’
The old woman smiled and said: ‘The one that you feed.’
We felt this was a great story showing the importance of letting your positive aspects shine through.
Science
This week, we have explored the life and work of Carl Linnaeus, a taxonomist, who was the very first to classify and group living things based on their similarities. The children were tasked with producing a fact file all about him. I was incredibly impressed with the independent work that the children produced.
Computing
We are currently exploring how computers communicate with each other and how data is transferred. This week, we looked at how computers send information in data packets and tried hard to simulate this in the hall. We found it a lot more challenging than we thought it would be
A huge well done to Ava K for winning the raffle ticket prize this week and to Joshua, Michael, Eva E and Harry for having their work selected for excellent examples. They will bring them home next Friday to share with you.
Finally, well done to Joshua, Natalie and Roey for earning their times table rockstars certificates.
