Delamere Weekly Blog - 19.11.2021

What a super busy and rewarding week we have had!  We have seen lots of personal achievements this week including some improved presentation skills and some great reading successes.  Keep your eye out for who has climbed to the top of the Bronze reading ladder!

In English this week we have been looking at playing with vocabulary for humour and effect in preparation for writing our own versions of 'The Owl and the Pussy Cat'.  There has been lots of fun and laughter as we considered some of the funny and wonderful antics animals get up to including marching ducks and donkeys that bow.  Lots of focus on basic skills too this week with the formation of simple sentences and use of capital letters and full stops. The children did not disappoint when it came to writing their own poems, and instead of the Owl and the Pussycat we had lots of new versions such as the Dog and the Butterfly, the Mouse and the Kangaroo and the Frog and the Crocodile to name just a few.

Your child had their spelling check on Monday and the scores were added to their reading dairies if they had their dairy in school with them.  Please can you make sure that your child's reading books and diary are in school every day.  Thank you to those that already do this!  New spellings have been sent home and an electronic copy is attached to this blog. We have also been working super hard on our phonics work in preparation for the Phonics Screening Check next week.

In Maths our focus has been on number bonds and fact families.  We really enjoyed using the LearnPads to explore fact families further.  Perhaps your child might like to try out the game at home too.  Click this link to access the game  https://www.topmarks.co.uk/number-facts/number-fact-families

We have continued to look at remembrance in our history work with a focus on considering key vocabulary within their sentences.  Lots of wonderful discussions once again surrounding children's own family stories and personal experiences of being part of a remembrance parade.  Some truly compassionate conversations were had with many children making such thoughtful connections with how thankful they are for the acts of others who by 'Letting their lights shine before others' helped to make the world a safer place for them to live in.

This week has also been Anti Bullying Week and the focus this year is 'One Kind Word'. The children explored words that can spread kindness and made a beautiful paper chain with a kind word or action written on each piece. We also thought about the effect that our actions and words can have on those around us ,like the chain reaction of dominoes. We watched a fantastic domino rally video, made our own domino rallies and then stood in a human domino rally, but instead of knocking into each other we passed along the line postivity, compassion and kind words. It was a really beautiful thing to watch the children's faces light up as they passed smiles and kind words to each other. "You fill my heart with love", " I think that you are a super friend" and "You have a lovely smile" were just a few precious examples. We also talked about the story of David and Goliath, focusing on how it can show us that we can say no to bullying. Although we didn;t think it would be a good idea to throw stones at people we did talk about things that we can do to help put a stop to bullying. Well done Delamere!

Many thanks for your continued support with your child's reading.  Reading regularly with your child makes a huge impact on their progress.
