Delamere Weekly Blog - 22.11.2024
Date: 22nd Nov 2024 @ 1:46pm
This week has certainly been a cold one with some beautiful frosty mornings. The children have coped well with following instructions to keep us all safe whilst exploring the frost and ice outside and it has been lovely watching them have fun in the winter wonderland.
In English this week we have begun to explore our new book ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark’ with the week starting off with a letter from an owl called Plop. He told us that he was afraid of something and we predicted what we thought it might be (we hadn’t seen the title at this point!) Then we worked together to write noun phrases to describe what Plop looks like, using some lovely vocabulary such as soft, feathery wings and sharp, pointy talons. We will use these next week to write a description of Plop.
In Maths we have been looking at finding number bonds to 100 and then adding and subtracting ones. Lots of lovely practical work and we can see that the children’s mental maths is really coming along – keep those Numbots sessions going!
On Thursday we had an exciting online workshop with Tracey from The Army Museum all about Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale. It was fascinating to see artefacts from the Victorian era, including a bed chamber, and to look at the similarities and differences of the 2 very significant women. We were given the chance to ask some questions at the end and the Tracey was really impressed with the questions the children asked. My favourite was “Did Mary and Florence ever meet?” and we were quite shocked to hear that they only met one time and that Florence apparently didn’t think very highly of Mary Seacole.
In other areas of the curriculum we created habitats for jaguars and snow leopards using collage in Science, reviewed the continents in Geography, looked at what life was like in Britain during the reigns of the 3 Queens, made some Father Christmas pictures for a whole school project and wrote words to describe Kings and Jesus the King in RE.
Our big WELL DONE this week goes to Archie, Izzy and Reuben for earning Numbots certificates.
We hope that you have a wonderful, if not cold, weekend and look forward to more fun and learning next week.
