Delamere's Weekly Blog - 17.1.25

Another jam packed week in Delamere this week, full of hard work and lots of progress.
It was an exciting week in English as we took on the role of an author pulling together all of our mastery skills to write some excellent fact files about owls. They were full of noun phrases, the words and, but and or and commas to join items in a list and we were so proud of how the children used key vocabulary such as regurgitate, nocturnal and plumage. We are now ready to move onto our poetry unit.
In Maths we continued our work on subtraction, using dienes blocks to exchange tens for ten ones to enable us to cross tens, e.g. 25 – 7. We then used number lines to first count back to the previous 10, so 25 – 7 step one would be 25 – 5 = 20 and then take the rest of 7 away, so 20 – 2 = 18. We worked hard to jump first to the previous 10 before subtracting the rest of the number. Finally we learnt how to draw lines and dots and rainbow lines to help us to solve addition sentences involving 2-digit and 1-digit numbers. (See image below). Great work Delamere! Next week we will move onto adding two 2-digit numbers using tens and ones blocks first and then our written method.
In other areas of the curriculum we have looked at stretchy materials in Science ready to investigate them next week, explored bullying scenarios and videos and made decisions based on good and bad choices surrounding bullying in PSHCE, continued to develop our PE skills in gymnastics and then games today, (please make sure that ALL kits are in school every week), looked closely at the bible in RE and then in DT we explored different joining techniques including staples, glue and pins.
Our big WELL DONE this week goes to Kalvin, Maxwell, Isabelle and Eliza. It’s great to see some different names up there! Thank you to the grown ups who have requested Numbots login details. It is great to see these children now accessing their home learning, which is such an important part of them becoming competent mathematicians. Please refer to the homework tab on our class page on the website to see what the expectation for weekly home learning is. Here is the link directly to this page.

Homework. Homework at Over St John’s. Reading. Reading and sharing books at home, as well as in school, is essential and can make a huge difference to a child’s reading ability and helps to develop an enthusiasm for reading and a life-long love of books.
