Delamere's Weekly Blog - 19.1.2024
Date: 19th Jan 2024 @ 4:30pm
It has been another busy week in Delamere with the weather bringing some challenges but also some beautifully fresh days!
In English this week we have begun to get to know the character of our book ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark’. We watched videos of real owls gliding and swooping graefully through the sky. We then read the first part of the story and explored Plop’s journey from his branch to the ground. We wrote a description of what it might have been like using adverbs to add more detail. There were some fantastic pieces of writing produced with Daisy and Sebastian even getting gold stickers from Mrs Snowdon for their super work! Towards the end of the week we applied our learning to a description of the fireworks display that Plop watched and again the results were great.
In Maths we have worked hard on our addition and subtraction and learnt how we can exchange one ten for ten ones when subtracting when crossing 10. See the example below. We then added and subtracted tens and found that our 100 grids were really helpful for this.
In Science we started our unit on materials and looked at some items made from unusual materials. There was a dress made from newspaper, chairs made from cardboard tubes and a desk made out of a car! Some of the materials were more suitable than others and I am not sure the newspaper dress will be hitting the shops soon, not very suitable on a rainy day.
In History we continued to learn about the Great Fire of London, comparing London now to London in 1666. We found that some things have stayed the same, like it is still the capital city, but lots of things have changed. We focused on Transport, London at night, buildings and people.
In our 1Decision PSHE session this week we began our Year 2 Relationship unit on Bullying. We thought about what the word bullying means and looked at a selection of scenarios thinking about whether or not they were examples of bullying. Super discussion today Delamere! Next week we will watch a video and see which character we think is making a good decision.
This week has been so busy that we haven’t managed to squeeze in our Nursery Rhyme of the week but next week we will be practising the song ‘London Bridge is Falling Down’. The earliest records of this rhyme are from the 17th Century, the period that we are learning about in History. It has a lot of words so it would be great if you could have a look at it at home. We will also be learning a simple playground game to go along with the rhyme.

Our big WELL DONE this week goes to Tyler and Daisy!
We hope that you have a wonderful weekend and look forward to more fun and learning next week.
