Hatchmere's Class Blog 10.10.25

What a fantastic week we’ve had in Reception! The children have been full of energy, imagination, and curiosity as they explored, built, and played their way through a wide range of activities designed to support their development in meaningful ways.

🏃‍♂️ Gross Motor Fun: Climbing, Digging, and Running!

This week, we’ve focused on developing our gross motor skills through lots of outdoor play. The children have been climbing on our play equipment, digging in the mud kitchen, and running races with their friends.

Why it matters: These activities help strengthen muscles, improve coordination and balance, and support overall physical health. They also build confidence and resilience as children challenge themselves physically.

🏗️ Big Builds: Imagination in Action

Using large blocks, crates, and fabric, the children worked together to build incredible structures including:

  • A pirate ship with a lookout tower
  • A rocket ready for blast-off
  • A castle complete with a throne
  • A cosy house with a garden

Why it matters: These collaborative builds encourage teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity. Children learn to negotiate, plan, and adapt their ideas—skills that are essential for both academic and social development.

🔺 Maths: Exploring Patterns with Shapes

In our maths sessions, the children used their knowledge of patterns to create ABB sequences using coloured shapes. They made beautiful pictures and repeating patterns that showed their growing understanding of sequencing and shape recognition. Their subitising and number work is developing beautifully.

Why it matters: Pattern work supports early algebraic thinking and helps children recognise order and predictability—key concepts in maths and science.

🏏 Cricket with Hatchmere: Learning to Bowl

We had a brilliant time with Hatchmere this week, where the children learned how to bowl using an underarm throw. They practiced aiming, controlling their movements, and cheering each other on.

Why it matters: Sports like cricket help develop hand-eye coordination, focus, and teamwork. Learning to follow rules and take turns also supports social and emotional development.

🔤 Phonics: Segmenting and Blending

In phonics, we’ve been working hard on segmenting and blending sounds to read and write simple words. The children are beginning to apply these skills in their supported writing, and we’ve seen some fantastic early attempts—check out the examples in the photographs below!

Why it matters: Segmenting (breaking words into sounds) and blending (putting sounds together) are the building blocks of reading and writing. These skills are essential for literacy development and help children become confident communicators.

Thank you for your continued support. Don’t forget to ask your child what they built this week or what pattern they created—they love sharing their learning with you!

Enjoy your weekend.
