Hatchmere's Class Blog 1.5.26

Hello beautiful May!

I’m sure you’ve heard all about the dinosaur nests the children discovered in the outdoor classroom on Monday. By the end of the week, we had some very exciting news: the eggs had begun to hatch, revealing baby dinosaurs inside! The children were absolutely thrilled. They worked together to create a safe area around the nest, carefully making signs such as “Do Not Disturb” and “Protect the Nest”. They showed great care and respect, taking extra caution not to damage any part of it. It has been a truly lovely and memorable experience in our outdoor classroom this week.

In Drawing Club this week, the children enjoyed watching an episode of Winnie the Witch by Valerie Thomas and Korky Paul. Inspired by the story, they created their own houses using a variety of colourful shapes. Hatchmere then wrote independently about the colours and shapes they had chosen to build their houses. We had lots of fun with this activity, and it was wonderful to see how many children continued this learning during their choosing time by creating their own houses independently

Hatchmere have blown me away with their independent maths skills this week. The children have been confidently using counting strategies to count larger groups of objects, carefully lining up or circling each item as they count. They have also been exploring the different parts of teen numbers, for example recognising that 14 is made up of 10 and 4.

Alongside this, the children have been practising their number formation and ordering, writing numbers up to 20 with increasing accuracy. During our subitising activities, I have encouraged the children not only to recall and show the number they saw, but also to represent the dot patterns as number sentences, such as double 3 makes 6 or 2 and 1 makes 3. The children’s confidence in number is growing every day, and it has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and progress.

You may have heard that a vet’s practice has opened within our classroom? We have lots of animals that need treatment and the children are enjoying developing their language in meaningful play as they take it in turn to be Vets, customers and the animals themselves.

This week Hatchmere let their light shine by working together to care for the dinosaur nest, showing creativity and independence through writing and art, and demonstrating growing confidence and perseverance in their maths.

Enjoy your Bank Holiday weekend everyone, see you on Tuesday at 8.35am.
