Head Teacher Blog: Friday 1st March 2019

Date: 1st Mar 2019 @ 10:33am

This week, Hatchmere led Collective Worship on Thursday for the school on their Christian value of friendship. They talked about what friendship means to them and shared the story of David and Jonathan from the Bible – how they were such good friends and they made a promise to each other that, no matter what happened, they would always be friends. Hatchmere did a wonderful job of teaching us more about the Christian value of friendship and how ‘a sweet friendship refreshes the soul.’ Proverbs 27:9

A group of children from KS2 visited The Winsford Academy on Wednesday after school to take part in a Winsford wide food challenge. The children had to make pizzas and Spaghetti Bolognese in pairs. Mrs Kelly went down to support the children and although they didn’t win on this occasion – they did have some tasty food to take home! Well done and thank you to Jorja, Alycia, Isabel, Emmy, Emilia, Jacob and Sienna.

Our new vegetable plots are now almost complete! You will remember that we had a small, but perfectly formed, team of helpers in school at the end of January removing the tyres on our play area in preparation for our new vegetable plots. The first thank you goes to the Kelly family who came in en masse the first weekend of the holidays to do some further preparations and build a new shed. Then the next thank you goes to a group of volunteers from Barclays, organised by one of our parents, who have been in and worked more magic over the half term. They have completely removed the old vegetable plot and repurposed the sleepers (thank you to our parent with a chain saw!) into a new flower bed behind the mobile classroom. They have also put our new raised beds in place and put new bark in around them – it looks amazing! The beds just need the soil going in now, but the teachers have already been discussing at our staff meeting on Tuesday what we are going to do to kick start our growing, so a huge thank you to everyone who has made it possible and watch this space!

Many of you may have heard in the news about the ‘Momo challenge’ that has been on social media and the internet recently, as I know that a few children have been talking about it in school because they have heard about it. The challenge is in fact a hoax that’s gone viral, but the idea of this alone is likely to cause children distress — not helped by amplification in the media. It is vital that, as parents and carers, we find out the truth about such things and discuss them with our children so that they are better equipped as to how to deal with such things, and are more able to distinguish fact from rumour. I include information most weeks from the National Online Safety website and have been on there this week to see if there was anything to support parents in discussion with children. Please find attached a poster that I think you will find very helpful.

We have had a number of cases of chickenpox in school over the last three to four weeks, with new cases popping up on a regular basis. With that in mind, you may find the attached poster useful as a guidance to help you answer the question ‘When should my child return to school?’ following on from a number of common illnesses.
