Head Teacher Blog: Friday 22nd March 2019

Date: 22nd Mar 2019 @ 3:38pm

Exciting news! We have teamed up with a charity called ‘Magic Breakfast’ to enable us to deliver free breakfasts to all our children for the summer term! The breakfast will consist of a bagel that the children can collect on arrival in the playground from 8.30am and eat whilst they are waiting for school to start. We will have some visible Year 6 monitors who will be our ‘caterers’ who will give these out to the children. This is a really exciting opportunity for us and we are very grateful to Magic Breakfast and our school kitchen for enabling this to happen.

Congratulations to the 6 children in Year 5 who have worked with Mrs Williamson over the last 6 months finding out about the impact of our No Outsiders programme. These children have interviewed adults and children, observed lessons, Collective Worship and watched children at playtimes and gathered all of their evidence to make a presentation which they shared at a conference with three other schools yesterday. They have found out that, as a school, we welcome everyone regardless of age, gender, skin colour, sexual orientation, disabilities, languages and other differences. The quote of the day from one pupil was, “We are like a family.” I am so very proud of Kayleigh, James, Olivia, Connor, Lily and Daniel for all the hard work that they put into their research to prove that everyone is welcome at Over St. John’s as the are No Outsiders.

This week, #WakeUpWednesday were talking about 'Virtual Private Networks' (VPNs). Although they're a great privacy tool, they can allow children to bypass restrictions on web browsing, opening them up to potential dangers such as age-inappropriate content, malware infections and being spied upon. A guide has been written by David Ludlow. David has been a technology journalist for more than 20 years, covering everything from internet security to the latest computing trends and the smart home. A father of two (a nine-year-old and a six-year-old), he's had to control and manage how his children access online services and use apps.

About #WakeUpWednesday
National Online Safety believe in empowering parents, carers and trusted adults with the information they need to hold informed and age-appropriate conversations about online safety with their child, should they feel it is needed. Every Wednesday, they produce guides to focus on specific platforms/risks which they believe trusted adults should be aware of and I put this information into my blog. If there is a suggested platform that you would like them to focus on, you can email them at hello@nationalonlinesafety.com.

The children in Year 3 and 4 have been on their residential to Beeston over this last couple of days. I know that a quick text was sent home yesterday with some information about how they have been getting on. Miss Oxley told me that they were all singing our No Outsiders song around the campfire last night which made me feel very proud of them! I am sure that you will all receive happy and tired children later and will have a quiet night tonight!

Linmere enjoyed a workshop on Wednesday morning where they were working on some team building skills. They are attending a ‘Make It!’ challenge next week where they need to work together on their entrepreneurial skills, as part of the work that we have been doing with the Winsford Education Partnership on Raising Aspirations, and so the workshop was a little taster in preparation for that. I will tell you more about it next week.

The Friends of Winsford Town Park have registered with the Keep Britain Tidy charity to take part in the nationwide Great British Spring Clean. A town-wide litter-pick is being held in Winsford this weekend. They are calling for volunteers to collect litter from wherever they know there is some. Sacks of litter are to be returned to the Town Park Viewing Platform at any time over the weekend, and by late Sunday 24th everyone will be able to see how much has been collected, and how well the community has responded. CWAC will remove the refuse sacks on Monday 25th. Please see attached flyer for more details.
